What types of projects and tasks can an Underwriting Intern expect to handle during their internship?

As an Underwriting Intern, you can expect to assist with reviewing insurance applications, gathering and analyzing data, and helping prepare risk assessments under the supervision of experienced underwriters. You'll often work with cross-functional teams, such as sales and claims, to understand client needs and the factors that influence policy decisions. Interns commonly participate in meetings, support administrative tasks, and may be given small research projects to develop industry knowledge. This hands-on experience is invaluable for learning how underwriting decisions are made and for building foundational skills for a future career in insurance.

What are the Big 4 internships?

The Big 4 internships refer to internship programs offered by Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Ernst & Young (EY), and KPMG. These firms provide internship opportunities in areas such as auditing, consulting, tax, and advisory, often serving as a pathway to full-time roles in accounting and finance. Interns typically gain exposure to real client work, develop technical skills, and may earn certifications like CPA eligibility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Underwriting Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Underwriting Intern, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a foundational understanding of finance or risk management, often supported by progress toward a business or related degree. Familiarity with underwriting software, Microsoft Excel, and industry databases is typically required. Effective communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork distinguish top candidates in this role. These competencies are crucial for accurately assessing risk, supporting senior underwriters, and contributing to sound decision-making in the insurance or financial sector.

How to get into underwriting with no experience?

To start as an underwriting intern with no experience, focus on developing strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and basic knowledge of insurance or finance. Pursuing relevant coursework, obtaining certifications like the CPCU or ARM, and gaining familiarity with underwriting software can improve your chances. Entry-level internships often look for enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, making networking and applying to programs that offer training valuable steps.

Is 20 an hour good for an internship?

For an underwriting intern, $20 an hour is generally considered a competitive wage, especially for entry-level positions that may require basic financial or insurance knowledge. Internships often pay less than full-time roles, but this rate can vary based on location, company size, and industry standards. It is important to consider the internship's responsibilities, hours, and whether it offers additional benefits or professional development opportunities.

What does an underwriting intern do?

An underwriting intern assists underwriters by reviewing insurance applications, analyzing risk factors, and gathering relevant data. They often use industry software and may participate in evaluating policy terms under supervision to gain practical experience in the insurance underwriting process.
