Underwriter (Financial Lines)


Position Summary

A growing insurance organization is seeking an experienced and analytical Financial Lines Underwriter to support its underwriting operations. This role is responsible for assessing complex professional liability exposures, making sound underwriting decisions, and cultivating strong relationships with broker partners. The successful candidate will demonstrate solid business judgment, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering responsive service while contributing to profitable portfolio growth.


Primary Responsibilities


Evaluate Risk

Review and assess new business opportunities as well as renewal accounts within the Financial Lines segment. Analyze underwriting data, financial information, and exposure details to determine risk quality.


Underwriting Authority

Make informed decisions regarding account acceptance, pricing, coverage structure, terms, and conditions in accordance with established underwriting authority and organizational guidelines.


Manage Portfolio Performance

Oversee an assigned portfolio of business with a focus on achieving underwriting profitability, retention goals, and strategic growth objectives.


Build Distribution Relationships

Develop and strengthen partnerships with insurance brokers through consistent communication, technical expertise, and high-quality service.


Cross-Functional Coordination

Partner with colleagues across claims, actuarial, and risk management functions to evaluate loss trends, share insights, and support disciplined underwriting practices.


Policy Administration

Prepare and process quotations, endorsements, policy documents, and related underwriting materials in an accurate and timely manner.


Drive New Business Opportunities

Identify opportunities to increase market penetration and expand the professional liability book in alignment with business goals.


Industry Awareness

Remain informed on marketplace developments, emerging risks, regulatory changes, and evolving coverage trends affecting Financial Lines products.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Risk Management, Insurance, Finance, or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Minimum of two years of experience underwriting Financial Lines products preferred; other commercial underwriting experience will also be considered.
  • Knowledge of professional liability coverages, underwriting principles, pricing techniques, and policy structures.
  • Strong critical thinking, analytical, negotiation, and risk evaluation abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with brokers and internal stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with underwriting technologies, policy administration platforms, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to manage priorities independently while contributing effectively within a team-oriented environment.
  • Industry credentials such as CPCU, RPLU, or comparable designations are viewed favorably.
