What is an unclaimed property?

An Unclaimed Property job involves managing assets that have been abandoned or forgotten by their rightful owners, such as dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, or unclaimed insurance benefits. Professionals in this field work to ensure compliance with state laws, conduct due diligence to locate owners, and facilitate the reporting and remittance of unclaimed funds to government agencies. Their responsibilities may include data analysis, auditing, and liaising with businesses to ensure proper handling of unclaimed assets.

What are the typical daily responsibilities for someone working in an unclaimed property role?

Unclaimed Property professionals typically spend their days researching and reconciling outstanding accounts, preparing and submitting reports to state authorities, and ensuring compliance with escheatment regulations. They may also communicate with internal departments to gather required documentation, respond to inquiries from potential claimants, and coordinate the due diligence process for locating property owners. With frequent deadlines and evolving regulations, strong organizational and time management skills are important. Most roles offer opportunities to collaborate with legal, finance, and audit teams, giving employees a broad view of the organization's operations and potential career development in compliance or risk management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the unclaimed property position, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Unclaimed Property role, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of state escheatment laws, typically supported by a background in finance, accounting, or compliance. Experience with specialized unclaimed property software, databases, and document management systems is often required, and professional certifications like a CPA can be beneficial. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and organizational skills help professionals succeed when interfacing with internal teams, external claimants, or regulatory agencies. These competencies are essential for accurately managing property records, ensuring regulatory compliance, and effectively locating rightful owners.
