Practice environment

This is an outpatient/inpatient blended hematology/oncology position providing the full spectrum of cancer and benign hematology care. The role includes outpatient clinic, supervision of fellows and other trainees, oversight of an infusion center, and participation in the inpatient consult service at the Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center in Long Beach.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive evaluation and management of patients with solid tumors, hematologic malignancies, and benign hematologic conditions in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
  • Perform consultations, develop treatment plans, and provide follow-up care for inpatients and outpatients, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy management delivered through the infusion center.
  • Participate in and help lead inpatient hematology/oncology consult services, including coordinating admissions and co-managing complex patients with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Supervise and teach hematology/oncology fellows (majority of learners) and residents from affiliated training programs, providing clinical mentorship and bedside teaching.

This position is affiliated with the University of California, Irvine (UCI), with a strong focus on fellow education (majority of learners are fellows) and participation from residents of other programs. Fellows rotate at both UCI Medical Center and the Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center as part of their hematology/oncology training.

Opportunities exist to teach, mentor, and supervise trainees in both inpatient and outpatient clinical settings, and to pursue an academic appointment through UCI, subject to qualifications and institutional approval.
