Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Grounds Services maintains approximately 758 acres of managed campus grounds and more than 700 acres of forest land/trails. Services provided by Grounds include the following: Landscape Maintenance, Irrigation, Integrated Pest Management, Landscape Installation, Stormwater Management, Forest Management and Trail Maintenance, Parking Lot Maintenance and Arboriculture.
Position Summary
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $3,497 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE:
$1,748.50 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $1,748.50 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.

This recruitment is for two (2) Bldg & Env Services Technician - Journey positions (00033929 & 00033488 ). By applying, you will be considered for both positions.
Requires working knowledge of machine operations, safety practices, snow removal operations, and horticultural and turf management practices. Also requires good oral communication skills so that task instructions are delivered and received in a clear manner. Responsibilities generally include manual work related to the upkeep of highways, grounds, buildings and equipment on the UNC-CH campus, and the performance of a variety of physical labor tasks requiring some specialized knowledge and experience. Work is routine and repetitive in nature and may require strenuous physical exertion.
Requires a valid N.C. Driver's License or the ability to obtain one prior to hire date.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. NOTE: Some positions may require special licenses or certification.
Management Preferences
Directly related landscape maintenance experience at the journey level and ability to problem solve in high density population. Ability to obtain pesticide license if necessary. Operation of Zero Turn mower and ability to work in Hot and Cold Weather Conditions.
Required Licenses/Certifications
Requires a valid N.C. Driver's License or the ability to obtain one prior to hire date.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Ability to withstand extreme weather conditions (ranging from hot and humid to cold and windy) during any time of the day or night; perform physically demanding work; climb, bend, stoop, lift, and walk behind or operate equipment on varied terrain for extended periods of time; move objects weighing up to 50 pounds; and wear safety glasses and shoes, and hearing protection.
Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of essential university operations during periods of adverse weather or other emergency situations that may require the university to close.

**ELIGIBILITY FOR SIGN-ON BONUS
The selected candidate for this position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Qualified applicants must apply and be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:
To be eligible for a Sign-on bonus, an individual must not have worked in a probationary, permanent, or time-limited appointment in the last 12 months as an employee in North Carolina state government, including but not limited to the judicial system, state executive branch agencies, and the university system in a position subject to the State Human Resources Act.

A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and  less than 40 hours per week).

This SHRA Sign-on Bonus is contingent upon budget and final eligibility determination as of the effective date of hire. All recipients must sign the Pay Back Agreement form.
