Protect Public Health Across Maine

Staffing Solutions Organization (SSO) is seeking a Tuberculosis Contact Investigation Epidemiologist to support the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) Tuberculosis Program.

In this critical public health role, you will help prevent and control the spread of tuberculosis (TB) throughout Maine by conducting disease surveillance, supporting outbreak investigations, managing and analyzing epidemiological data, and collaborating with healthcare providers, public health professionals, and community partners.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative Infectious Disease Epidemiology team and play a key role in protecting the health and well-being of Maine residents through data-driven public health interventions and disease prevention efforts.

What You Will Do:Tuberculosis Surveillance & Investigation

• Conduct surveillance activities related to tuberculosis cases and contacts throughout the state.
• Participate in TB contact investigations and outbreak response activities.
• Collect, analyze, clean, and report epidemiological data for surveillance, grant reporting, and public health initiatives.
• Monitor TB genotyping data and identify potential outbreaks and disease transmission patterns.
• Assist with monitoring and evaluation of statewide TB prevention and control activities.

Epidemiological Analysis & Reporting

• Analyze, interpret, and disseminate surveillance findings to program staff, healthcare providers, and public health stakeholders.
• Coordinate data collection for federal Aggregate Reports Program Evaluation (ARPE) reporting requirements.
• Assist with state and federal grant reporting activities.
• Monitor disease trends and contribute to epidemiological assessments and recommendations.

Program Support & Collaboration

• Serve as the primary backup to the Tuberculosis Epidemiologist.
• Collaborate with Public Health Nursing, Medical Epidemiology, TB consultants, healthcare providers, and community partners.
• Assist with incoming and outgoing Interjurisdictional Notifications (IJNs) and communication with other state TB programs.
• Participate in TB response planning and implementation activities.
• Assist with management of the TB program inbox and program communications.

Infectious Disease Epidemiology Support

• Serve as a backup Subject Matter Expert for at least one additional infectious disease area beyond TB.
• Participate in Infectious Disease Epidemiology team activities and meetings.
• Support broader infectious disease surveillance and response initiatives as needed.

System & Program Administration

• Utilize REDCap and other surveillance systems to maintain records and update program data.
• Coordinate reporting related to arriving immigrants and asylees with health concerns using designated systems.
• Support continuous program improvement and operational effectiveness.

Minimum Qualifications:Required Education & Experience

• Master's Degree in Epidemiology or a closely related field; OR
• Bachelor's Degree in Epidemiology or a closely related field and two (2) years of professional experience in:
  • Infectious disease surveillance
  • Public health
  • Disease prevention programs
  • Nursing
  • Health education
  • Related healthcare fields

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates with the following experience are highly encouraged to apply:

• Experience in infectious disease surveillance, particularly tuberculosis.
• Knowledge of public health epidemiology principles and practices.
• Experience conducting epidemiological investigations and public health interventions.
• Knowledge of clinical laboratory testing and disease surveillance systems.
• Experience preparing technical reports, grant reports, and public health communications.
• Strong presentation and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Ability to facilitate discussions and build consensus among diverse groups.

Additional Preferred Skills:

• Fluency in one or more of the following languages:

Work Schedule & Environment:Training Period

During the first three months, the selected candidate will work:

• Monday-Friday
• Five days per week on-site in Augusta, Maine

Hybrid Schedule After Training

Following successful onboarding and training:

• Two days per week in the Augusta office
• Three days per week remote within Maine

Additional Requirements

• Participation in the Epi-On-Call and After-Hours On-Call rotation.
• On-call assignments generally occur approximately once per quarter and involve providing consultation support through Maine CDC's 24/7 infectious disease hotline.
• Statewide travel to support tuberculosis investigations and public health activities is required.
• Occasional schedule modifications may be necessary to support public health response efforts.
