Are travel agent jobs worth it?

Travel agent jobs involve helping clients plan and book travel arrangements, often requiring strong customer service and knowledge of booking systems. The profession can be rewarding for those passionate about travel, but it may involve irregular hours and commission-based income, which can impact job stability and earnings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a travel agent, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Travel Agent, you need strong customer service abilities, attention to detail, and a good understanding of travel industry practices, often supported by a certification such as CTA (Certified Travel Associate). Familiarity with Global Distribution Systems (GDS) like Amadeus or Sabre, as well as booking and reservation platforms, is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to adapt to client preferences set outstanding agents apart. These skills ensure clients receive personalized, efficient service and seamless travel experiences.

How does a travel agent typically collaborate with clients and travel vendors to create customized travel experiences?

Travel agents work closely with clients to understand their preferences, budget, and special requirements, then liaise with airlines, hotels, tour operators, and other service providers to arrange travel itineraries. This involves frequent communication, negotiation for the best rates or perks, and coordination to ensure all components of a trip align smoothly. Agents often troubleshoot issues such as flight changes or accommodation concerns, acting as an advocate for their client. Building strong relationships with both clients and vendors is essential for delivering memorable, tailored travel experiences.

What is the difference between Travel Agent vs Travel Consultant?

Travel Agents and Travel Consultants both assist clients with travel planning and bookings. While the terms are often used interchangeably, Travel Consultants may focus more on personalized, expert advice, whereas Travel Agents typically handle bookings through agencies. Both roles require similar credentials and work environments, making them closely related in the travel industry.

How to get hired as a travel agent?

To get hired as a travel agent, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, strong customer service skills, and knowledge of travel booking software or systems. Many employers prefer or require certification from organizations like The Travel Institute or the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). Gaining experience through internships or entry-level positions can also improve job prospects in this field.

VIP Corporate Travel Agent / Agent de voyages corporatifs VIP

Encore Travel

Montreal, QC • On-site

CA$55K - CA$85K/yr

Full-time

Posted 3 days ago

Job description

A VIP traveler does not want to be asked twice.

The window seat booked without a reminder. The hotel loyalty number applied before they think to mention it. The connection they hate, avoided on instinct because someone remembered the last three times it went wrong. That is not service. That is being known, and it is the difference between an agent and a resource.

VIP Corporate Travel Agents at Encore exist because being known does not happen by accident. Dedicated and complex accounts do not land with this role because policy requires it. They land because the traveler learned, itinerary after itinerary, that their preferences are never an afterthought here.

The Role

As a VIP Corporate Travel Agent, you manage new bookings and changes across air, hotel, rail, and car for Encore's most demanding travel clients: name changes, date shifts, itinerary rebuilds, all handled inside the client's travel policy and inside the traveler's expectations. You carry sensitive, private information with the same care every time, not just when someone is watching.

This is not a booking role. It is a relationship role wearing an agent's title.

What You'll Do

Own every VIP itinerary, start to finish. You book and rebuild international air, hotel, rail, and car reservations, and you do it fluently in the loyalty programs that matter to the traveler holding the ticket.

Protect what's sensitive and keep it compliant. You complete document verification and pre-check for every traveler in your care, advise on entry requirements before they're asked about, and keep every reservation inside the client's policy without being told twice.

Anticipate before they ask. You learn each traveler's preferences and hold them across every booking. An air request with a night away from home is an opening to offer the right hotel, not an afterthought. You close the loop other agents leave open.

Raise the standard for the team. You're a resource to your colleagues, not just your travelers. You answer questions before they're fully asked, and you share the tips and tricks that turn a good file into a clean one. Dedicated and complex accounts land with you because that reputation is earned, one file at a time.

Requirements
What You Bring

Required

  • 10+ years of travel industry experience, with a demonstrated command of international itineraries, fare rules, and loyalty program mechanics
  • A college diploma at minimum
  • Advanced, current knowledge of travel industry rules and processes, including document requirements and entry rules that shift by destination
  • The soft skills to guide a traveler to resolution in the fewest exchanges possible, and the persuasive, precise writing to do the same with colleagues and other teams
  • A customer orientation strong enough to build lasting relationships with travelers who do not tolerate friction
  • Ownership of mistakes: you correct them without waiting to be asked
  • The organizational discipline to manage multiple complex or dedicated accounts at once without missing a detail, and to meet service level agreements on every interaction

An asset

  • Formal travel school training
  • A university degree
  • Prior experience supporting dedicated or high-complexity accounts specifically
Who Thrives Here

The travelers Encore's VIP agents serve are busy, well-informed, and unforgiving of friction. They will not explain their preferences twice. They want someone who already has the answer ready, not someone still looking for it.

The agents who thrive in this role take that personally, in the best way. They close a file only when it's actually closed. They treat a colleague's question as worth answering fully, because the next complex account might land on that colleague's desk instead of theirs.

If precision and anticipation are how you measure a good day at work, this is where that gets rewarded.
