Job description

RK&K is seeking an experienced Roadway Group Lead to join and grow our transportation design practice in Blacksburg, Virginia. This senior leadership role is responsible for leading roadway and highway design efforts, mentoring staff, and supporting business development initiatives across Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic. The Roadway Group Lead will play a key role in shaping project delivery, technical excellence, and team growth within our transportation practice.
This role is available for relocation assistance. Sign on bonus considered comparable with current experience.
Essential Functions
As a Roadway Group Lead at RK&K, you will:
  • Provide technical and people leadership for roadway and highway design projects, primarily supporting VDOT and municipal clients
  • Lead and oversee the preparation of roadway design plans, reports, specifications, and construction cost estimates
  • Serve as Engineer of Record and oversee QA/QC for transportation design deliverables
  • Mentor and develop roadway engineers and designers, fostering technical growth and leadership development
  • Coordinate with project managers, technical specialists, subconsultants, and internal teams to deliver high-quality projects on schedule and within budget
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships with VDOT, local municipalities, and other transportation agencies
  • Support business development efforts including proposals, scopes, staffing plans, and client presentations
  • Contribute to the strategic growth of RK&K's roadway design practice in the Blacksburg and Western Virginia region

Required Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Virginia or ability to obtain through reciprocity
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in roadway or highway engineering and design
  • Demonstrated experience with DOT roadway design standards and practices
  • Proficiency with roadway design software including OpenRoads Designer and/or Civil3D and Microsoft Office tools
  • Proven ability to lead technical teams and manage multiple projects concurrently
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interface with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Experience serving as a technical or group lead within a roadway or transportation design team
  • Business development experience with DOT or municipal transportation clients
  • Knowledge of multi-modal transportation design including complete streets, ADA facilities, and trails
  • Active involvement in professional organizations such as ASHE, ACEC, or similar societies
