What are Translation Managers?

Translation Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the process of translating content from one language to another within an organization. They coordinate translation projects, manage teams of translators, and ensure that translated materials meet quality and consistency standards. Translation Managers often work with various departments to localize documents, websites, or software, and they may also be involved in selecting translation tools and managing budgets. Their role is crucial in helping companies communicate effectively across different languages and cultures.

What is the difference between Translation Manager vs Translator?

AspectTranslation ManagerTranslator

Industry UsageCommonly employed in organizations, agencies, and corporations managing multiple projectsFound in freelance, in-house, or agency settings focusing on translating documents or content

In summary, a Translation Manager oversees translation projects and teams, requiring management skills and certifications, while a Translator focuses on executing translation tasks, often working independently. Both roles are essential in the language services industry but differ in scope and responsibilities.

How does a Translation Manager typically collaborate with linguists, project managers, and clients during the translation process?

A Translation Manager works closely with a team of linguists, project managers, and clients to ensure that translation projects meet quality standards and deadlines. They coordinate workflows, assign tasks to appropriate translators, and review deliverables for accuracy and consistency. Communication is key—Translation Managers often clarify client requirements, handle feedback, and troubleshoot issues as they arise. This role requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to balance multiple projects while maintaining high-quality output.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Translation Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Translation Manager, you need strong language proficiency, project management experience, and a background in linguistics or translation studies. Familiarity with computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, translation management systems (TMS), and relevant certifications such as ATA or PMP is highly valuable. Exceptional organizational, communication, and leadership skills help you effectively manage teams and coordinate with clients. These skills ensure high-quality translations, efficient workflows, and satisfied stakeholders in multilingual projects.

Description

We are seeking a highly organized, polyvalent and bilingual Legal professional to support our organization’s compliance with Québec language compliance (Bill 96), francization requirements, and provide support to the Legal, Labour and Employment Team.

Responsibilities

Language Compliance

  • Maintain, track, and update the inventory of materials as required, subject to Québec language requirements.
  • Support Francization obligations where applicable (documentation coordination, scheduling, evidence collection for audits).
  • Support with preparing internal trackers, reports, dashboards, and summaries related to B96 compliance and Language office activities.
  • Implement procedures and related tasks as required that support consistency and quality of French across the company.
  • Support language compliance obligations under other applicable legislative frameworks, including the Official Languages Act, as responsibilities evolve and as determined by the organization.

Language Office & Translation Support

  • Serve as general resource for the Language Office: intake, prioritization, assignment, turnaround tracking.
  • Support with translation validation for internal and external resources across the company.
  • Establish the centralized repositories for bilingual templates and legal department managed resources.
  • Support training rollouts on language obligations for business teams.

Labour / Employment Support

  • Provide operational support to Legal Counsel in Labour and Employment/HR matters, particularly for Québec and Atlantic provinces, but also where required for other provinces as well, including:
    • Drafting of factual summaries, reviewing HR letters, working on how-to documents and other HR tools to manage cases at Legal Counsel request;
    • Preparation of materials for proceedings under supervision of Legal Counsel as cases may require.
    • Partner with Labour & Employment and Human Resources to coordinate the certified French/English translation of employment agreements, and other internal communications impacting Québec.
    • Handle HR and Labour support overflow as required, including providing guidance on legal interpretation and case management.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or college diploma in Law/Paralegal Studies, or related field.

Experience

  • 2-4 years of coordination experience in HR/Labour environments.
  • Bilingual (English/French) with strong written skills in both languages; ability to review and route French documents with care and consistency.

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience supporting Québec language compliance pursuant Bill 96.
  • Familiarity with OQLF processes, Francization, and Québec employment documentation.

Core Competencies

  • Organization & Prioritization: manages multiple deadlines, triages requests, and escalates risks early.
  • Detail Orientation: meticulous version control, accurate metadata, careful QA on bilingual documents.
  • Confidentiality & Judgment: handles sensitive labour and legal materials with discretion.
  • Process Mindset: builds clear SOPs, checklists, templates, and continuous improvement loops.

Language Requirement: Proficiency in English is required for this position due to the frequent communications that must be conducted in English with various stakeholders. This requirement is justified by the nature of the responsibilities and operational needs.
