What is a trainee life coach?

Trainee life coaches are individuals who are in the process of learning and developing the skills necessary to support clients in achieving their personal and professional goals. They typically undergo formal training programs, attend workshops, and may work under the supervision of experienced coaches. Trainee life coaches often practice coaching with real clients as part of their certification process, focusing on communication, goal-setting, and motivational techniques. Their primary aim is to help clients identify obstacles and create actionable plans for positive change while gaining practical experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a trainee life coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Trainee Life Coach, you need foundational knowledge of coaching principles, active listening, and goal-setting, often supported by enrollment in a recognized coaching certification program. Familiarity with coaching models, digital communication tools, and client management systems is typically required. Strong empathy, adaptability, and interpersonal communication skills help build trust and rapport with clients. These competencies are crucial for effectively supporting clients in achieving personal and professional growth.

What types of support and mentorship can a trainee life coach expect during their initial training period?

As a Trainee Life Coach, you will typically receive structured support through supervision sessions, shadowing experienced coaches, and regular feedback from mentors. Most organizations pair trainees with certified coaches who guide them in client interactions, ethical practices, and coaching techniques. This collaborative environment helps you build confidence and develop your unique coaching style, while ensuring adherence to industry standards. Additionally, peer learning and group workshops are common, providing opportunities to share challenges and strategies with fellow trainees.

Over the course of 8–12 months, you’ll rotate not only through operations, logistics, sales, safety, and leadership functions, but also across multiple facilities - gaining the broad perspective, skills, and real-world exposure needed to run a site or lead a functional team. This program is designed as a multi-location rotation across Alter's locations in multiple cities and states. The city where this posting is listed may not be the location where the training will occur.

  • Support real production, scheduling, and transportation efforts.
  • Shadow and learn from seasoned yard managers.
  • Gain exposure to customer relationships, negotiations, and pricing.

  • Prepare to lead your own team or facility upon program completion.
  • Rotate through various Alter locations to gain further exposure.

What We’re Looking For

  • Associate's, Bachelor’s degree (preferred majors: Business, Supply Chain, Engineering, Industrial Tech) or 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong communication, leadership potential, and business math skills.
  • Willingness to relocate and work hands-on in a heavy industrial environment.
  • Problem-solvers who are curious, adaptable, and ready to lead.
  • Ability to relocate required. Assistance provided.

Program Perks

  • Competitive pay and benefits (medical, dental, vision, life insurance, PTO).
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Relocation and temporary housing assistance, if eligible.
  • Ongoing coaching, mentoring, and advancement opportunities.
