Job description

The Business Development & Insurance Producer Trainee is responsible for helping grow the agency by developing new business relationships, generating referrals, prospecting for new customers, and assisting with the sale of personal and commercial insurance products.


This position is designed for a licensed insurance professional who wants to develop a career in insurance sales and business development. During the initial 90-day training period, the employee will receive hands-on training in agency systems, insurance products, sales processes, prospecting, quoting, documentation, and customer follow-up.


As training progresses, the employee will take increasing responsibility for developing their own pipeline, quoting personal lines business, identifying commercial insurance opportunities, and building relationships with local businesses and referral partners.


Career Path


The initial 90 days are considered a training and development period. Successful completion of the training period may lead to advancement into a full Insurance Producer/Business Development position with increased production responsibilities and eligibility for the agency's applicable producer compensation and incentive structure.


Continued advancement will be based on demonstrated performance, production, quality of business, prospecting activity, reliability, and the employee's ability to generate new business for the agency.

Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities


Business Development & Referrals


  • Develop relationships with local business owners and community professionals.
  • Identify potential commercial insurance opportunities and refer qualified prospects for quotes.
  • Build relationships with referral partners who can provide personal and commercial insurance opportunities.
  • Conduct outbound calls, emails, and follow-up with prospective customers and referral sources.
  • Attend approved networking and community events when appropriate.
  • Maintain an organized pipeline of prospects, referrals, and follow-up opportunities.
  • Look for opportunities to generate home, auto, commercial, life, and other insurance referrals for the agency.


Personal Lines Sales


  • Learn agency procedures for quoting and selling home and auto insurance.
  • Contact prospective customers and gather information necessary to prepare insurance quotes.
  • Follow up consistently with prospects who have received quotes.
  • Identify opportunities to bundle home and auto coverage.
  • Cross-sell additional products when appropriate.
  • Work toward independently managing personal-lines prospects from initial contact through policy issuance.
  • Meet activity and production expectations established by the agency.


Commercial Insurance Development


  • Prospect local businesses for potential insurance opportunities.
  • Learn to identify basic commercial insurance needs and opportunities.
  • Gather preliminary information from business owners.
  • Schedule appointments or insurance reviews for qualified commercial prospects.
  • Work with agency leadership and experienced team members on commercial opportunities while training.
  • Maintain consistent follow-up with business prospects and referral sources.


Training & Professional Development


During the initial 90-day training period, the employee will be expected to develop proficiency in:


  • Farmers products and underwriting requirements.
  • Home and auto quoting.
  • Windstorm and other Texas coastal insurance considerations.
  • Commercial insurance prospecting and basic risk identification.
  • AgencyZoom and other agency technology.
  • Proper documentation of customer and prospect communications.
  • Agency sales procedures and follow-up expectations.
  • Compliance, confidentiality, and appropriate use of agency communication systems.
  • Customer service and professional communication standards.


A successful employee in this position will not simply wait for agency leads. They will actively create opportunities by developing relationships, prospecting, following up, asking for referrals, and identifying insurance needs.

Qualifications

  • Active Texas General Lines Property & Casualty license preferred.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Comfortable speaking with consumers and business owners.
  • Willingness to make outbound prospecting calls and ask for business.
  • Strong organizational and follow-up skills.
  • Ability to learn multiple insurance products and agency systems.
  • Professional and dependable.

  • Previous business ownership, sales, customer service, or business-development experience is a plus.
