Job description

Every day, we get opportunities to make a positive impact - on our colleagues, partners, customers and society. Together, we're pioneering the solutions of the future and unlocking the full potential of precious resources. Trusted to act on initiative, we challenge conventional thinking to develop world-leading technologies that inspire progress in vital areas, including energy, food, water and shipping.

As we push forward, the innovative, open spirit that fuels our 140-year-old start-up culture and rapid growth also drives our personal growth. So, as we shape a more resourceful, less wasteful world, we build our careers too.

About the job
We work every day to enable safe, compliant, and efficient global trade operations. As a Senior Trade Compliance Associate, you will play a vital role in supporting our U.S. sites by ensuring our import and export activities meet regulatory requirements and reflect our commitment to responsible business practices.

This is a hands-on role for an experienced trade compliance professional who thrives at the intersection of technical regulations, cross-functional collaboration, and operational excellence. You will support the full lifecycle of international shipments-from classification and licensing to documentation, auditing, and internal process governance. You'll also partner closely with teams across logistics, engineering, IT, legal, and operations to maintain our high compliance standards and help safeguard our supply chain.

This is a hybrid opportunity based in Indianapolis, IN.

As a part of the team, you will:

  • Support the end-to-end execution of import and export activities, ensuring all documentation and regulatory requirements are met.

  • Maintain and update trade compliance procedures, including the Export Compliance Manual, as our compliance program evolves.

  • Conduct jurisdiction and classification analyses, including determining ECCNs and identifying USML vs. CCL applicability.

  • Prepare and submit export licenses in SNAPR and monitor application progress, including responding to BIS inquiries.

  • Partner with Engineering and IT to implement Technology Control Plans (TCPs) and ensure proper controls over technical data and deemed exports.

  • Lead internal audits of trade compliance processes, identify gaps, and support voluntary self-disclosures when necessary.

  • Review and validate international shipment documents such as Commercial Invoices, EEIs, Air Waybills, and license documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance.

  • Develop and deliver trade compliance training to operations, engineering, and shipping teams to promote a strong compliance culture.

  • Evaluate goods for preferential treatment eligibility (e.g., USMCA) and ensure compliant qualification.

  • Work closely with logistics, shipping, legal, and operations teams to support smooth and compliant global shipments.

  • Maintain accurate regulatory reporting, including export filings, license usage, and required recordkeeping.

  • Perform HTS classifications and support tariff analysis to ensure proper customs valuation and compliance.

What you know:

You have a bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Law, Engineering, or a related field and have:

  • 5+ years of direct Trade Compliance experience (export, import, or both).

  • Experience with EAR; familiarity with ITAR preferred.

  • Professional certifications such as CES or CUSECO (preferred).

  • Licensed Customs Broker (preferred).

  • Familiarity with C-TPAT, ACE, Reconciliation, and Duty Drawback.

  • Experience using automated trade compliance systems and reporting tools.

We care about diversity, inclusion and equity in our recruitment processes. We also believe behavioral traits can provide important insights into a candidate's fit to a role. To help us achieve this we apply Pymetrics assessments, and upon application you will be invited to play the assessment games.

What's in it for you?

Alfa Laval offers a competitive salary and full benefits package, including medical/dental/vision/life, 401(k) plan, and more. At Alfa Laval, we carefully consider a wide range of compensation factors to determine your total compensation package. We rely on market indicators to determine compensation and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to get it right. These considerations can cause your compensation to vary and will also be dependent on your location. The base salary for this role is typically $75,000 - $90,000 annually.
