What is a tool design engineer?

Tool Design Engineers are professionals who create and develop tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and other devices used in manufacturing processes. They work closely with production and engineering teams to design tools that improve efficiency, ensure product quality, and enhance safety. Their responsibilities include designing tools using CAD software, selecting appropriate materials, and overseeing the testing and modification of prototypes. Tool Design Engineers play a crucial role in optimizing production workflows and reducing costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tool design engineer?

To thrive as a Tool Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, CAD modeling, and an understanding of manufacturing processes, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and knowledge of industry standards or certifications like ASME are often required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure the creation of precise, efficient, and cost-effective tools that meet production needs and quality standards.

What are some typical challenges tool design engineers face when collaborating with manufacturing teams?

Tool Design Engineers often work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure that the tools they design are feasible, efficient, and meet production needs. A common challenge is balancing innovative tool design with practical manufacturing constraints, such as material costs or equipment capabilities. Effective communication is essential to translate technical drawings into actionable solutions and to address any unforeseen production issues quickly. By building strong relationships and maintaining open dialogue, Tool Design Engineers can help streamline production processes and drive continuous improvement.

What is the difference between Tool Design Engineer vs Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectTool Design EngineerManufacturing Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning and developing tools and dies used in manufacturing processesPlanning and optimizing manufacturing processes to produce products efficiently
Required SkillsCAD/CAM, mechanical design, materials knowledgeProcess improvement, production planning, quality control
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, machine shops, manufacturing plantsFactory floors, production lines, engineering offices
Common CertificationsCAD certifications, mechanical engineering degreesSix Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, engineering degrees

While both roles support manufacturing, Tool Design Engineers focus on creating the tools and dies needed for production, whereas Manufacturing Engineers optimize the overall manufacturing process to improve efficiency and quality.

What does a tool design engineer do?

A tool design engineer develops and creates tools, dies, and fixtures used in manufacturing processes. They analyze product specifications, use CAD software to design tools, and collaborate with production teams to ensure functionality and efficiency. Their work often involves testing prototypes and refining designs to improve manufacturing quality and productivity.

Job description

  • Job Category: Integrion Automation
  • Employee Type: Exempt

Integrion Automation (formally Wauseon Machine) is a leading provider of custom automation solutions specializing in robotic systems, industrial automation, and custom machine design. We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing engineering team located in our Wauseon, Ohio facility. This is a full-time, onsite position.

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for leading the design and development of custom automated manufacturing equipment from concept through installation and validation. This role is responsible for the conceptualization, mechanical design, engineering analysis, fabrication support, assembly, and commissioning of custom machinery, robotic work cells, fixtures, and industrial automation systems that meet customer requirements for performance, quality, safety, and manufacturability.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineering professional with strong machine design expertise, a passion for solving complex engineering challenges, and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams throughout the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities
  • Design Development: Create conceptual and final designs for robotic automation systems and industrial machine tools, leveraging SolidWorks for 3D modeling and assemblies. Ensure that designs meet customer specifications and internal requirements. Own all mechanical designs, including debug, troubleshooting, and redesign, regardless of initial designer, to ensure project success.
  • Project Leadership: Direct all Mechanical Engineering disciplines on automation projects and lead a team of Mechanical Engineers on large projects.
  • Cross Department Collaboration: Work closely with departments such as controls, operations, and safety to gather inputs and deliver effective automation solutions.
  • Machine Safety Risk Assessments: Lead and drive the development of safety risk assessments for automation systems and machine tools, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
  • Control System Development: Collaborate with Controls Engineers to develop comprehensive Sequence of Events (SOE) and timing charts for automated systems and machinery.
  • Concept and Design Reviews: Lead internal reviews of design concepts and final designs with internal teams and end customers to ensure project alignment and resolve technical issues.
  • Documentation and Manufacturing Support: Generate and manage all necessary project documentation (e.g., prints, bills of materials) and release them to manufacturing and purchasing departments. Support the construction, assembly, and testing phases of projects. Maintain task status on mechanical engineering checklists, including APP process and design checklists, to ensure project alignment.
  • Project Execution: Monitor project progress, ensuring that designs are executed within scope, on time, and within budget. Provide technical support across all stages of project development, from design to delivery. Attend weekly project status meetings to collaborate with the project team and ensure alignment.
  • Automation Process Improvement: Identify, prioritize, and implement automation solutions to optimize existing processes and increase operational efficiency in machine tools and robotic work cells.
  • Customer Interaction and Technical Support: Act as a key point of contact for customers, providing technical support, resolving issues, and offering expert guidance on automation solutions.
  • Collaboration with Cross-functional Teams: Work alongside mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and other stakeholders to support the overall design, testing, and implementation of automation systems. Participate in regular meetings with support staff and team members to address project issues and updates.
  • FMEA and Safety Assessments: Conduct and contribute to Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and other safety assessments to ensure the reliability and safety of automation systems.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay engaged in the latest trends in robotic automation and industrial machine tools to drive innovation and improvements in design and performance.
Qualifications
  • Experience: 5+ years of experience designing and developing industrial machine tools, automation systems, and robotic work cells. Strong experience with the integration of robotic systems into manufacturing processes is required.
  • Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks 3D parametric modeling and assemblies, with experience using SolidWorks PDM Professional for data management.
  • Education: Bachelorโ€™s or Associateโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
  • Machining Knowledge: Practical knowledge of tool and die design, machining processes, and industrial machine tools is a plus.
  • Software Proficiency: Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Microsoft 365, and Microsoft Teams.
Desired Soft Skills
  • Strong organizational skills and high attention to detail, ensuring that designs meet both internal and customer standards.
  • Excellent time management and project planning abilities to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team and independently when required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact confidently with customers and colleagues alike.
