What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a TMM (Technical Marketing Manager), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Marketing Manager, you need a solid background in marketing principles, product management, and technical expertise relevant to your industry, often supported by a degree in marketing, engineering, or computer science. Familiarity with CRM software, marketing automation tools, analytics platforms, and sometimes certifications like HubSpot or Google Analytics is typical. Excellent communication, project management, and cross-functional collaboration skills are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure effective product positioning, alignment between technical and marketing teams, and successful go-to-market strategies.

How does a Technical Marketing Manager (TMM) typically collaborate with product and sales teams?

A Technical Marketing Manager works closely with both product and sales teams to bridge the gap between technical product details and customer needs. They often participate in product development meetings to provide market feedback and create technical content, such as whitepapers and presentations, that support the sales process. Regular communication with sales ensures that product messaging aligns with customer expectations, and TMMs may also help train sales staff on new product features or industry trends. This collaborative approach ensures that both teams are equipped to address customer requirements effectively.

What are TMMs?

TMM stands for Technical Marketing Manager. TMMs are professionals who bridge the gap between engineering teams and marketing departments, translating complex technical information into messaging that resonates with customers and stakeholders. They work closely with product managers, sales teams, and engineers to develop marketing strategies, create technical content, and support product launches. Their goal is to ensure that customers understand the technical value and benefits of products or services.

What is the difference between Tmm vs Mechanical Technician?

AspectTmmMechanical Technician

What you'll do

  • Perform day-to-day metasurface design and simulation to meet product and performance specifications.
  • Develop and maintain simulation workflows and modeling pipelines using in-house developed codes.
  • Scientific compute, program, and automate design tasks using Julia and Python.
  • Collaborate with process engineers, metrology team, and foundry partners to ensure design-for-manufacturing.
  • Analyze the optical performance data, optimize, and iterate on designs to meet stringent optical and manufacturing requirements.
  • Contribute to current product improvement and roadmap for next-generation and future metasurface-based products.
  • Document simulation methodologies, design rules, and best practices.

What you'll need

  • Solid understanding of metasurface physics and diffractive/geometrical optics.
  • Strong hands-on experience with FDTD (e.g., MEEP), RCWA (e.g., S4), and familiarity with other modeling methods (TMM, BPM, FEM, etc).
  • Programming experience in Julia, Python, and MATLAB for simulation scripting, scientific computing, and workflow automation.
  • Experience in collaborating with process development (lithography, etching, deposition), metrology (SEM/FIB, bench-top setup), and manufacturing teams.
  • Proficiency with Git for version control and SLURM for workload management.
  • Detail-oriented, self-driven, able to thrive in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with custom simulation tool development or optimization pipeline.
