Overview
The Tile Laborer supports the tile installation process by preparing surfaces, assisting with tile setting, and performing finishing work. This entry-level role requires attention to detail, physical stamina, and a willingness to learn. The Tile Laborer performs tasks under the guidance of more experienced tile setters and upholds Artisan Tile's standards of professionalism and respect in all client interactions. Duties include using, supplying, or holding materials or tools, as well as cleaning the work area and equipment.
Key Responsibilities
Surface Preparation
  • Remove damaged tile and/or mortar, and clean or prepare surfaces using tools such as pliers, hammers, chisels, drills, and wire brushes.
  • Assist in preparing new construction surfaces. Aid with the installation of underlayment, waterproofing membranes, or other foundational materials on floors, showers, or other surfaces to ensure proper installation.
  • Clean installation surfaces, equipment, tools, work sites, or storage areas using water, chemical solutions, or polishing machines.
  • Correct surface imperfections or fill chipped, cracked, or broken tiles using fillers, adhesives, or grouting materials.

Material Handling
  • Transport materials, tools, or machines to installation sites manually or using conveyance equipment such as dollies.
  • Arrange or store materials, tools, and equipment to ensure organized and efficient use on-site.

Measuring and Cutting Assistance
  • Assist with cutting materials to specified sizes for installation using power saws or tile cutters.

Adhesive Application
  • Mix mortar, plaster, and grout manually or using machines according to standard formulas.
  • Apply caulk, sealants, or other agents to installed surfaces as directed.

Tile Setting Support
  • Aid in laying and aligning tiles, ensuring proper spacing using straightedges, levels, and squares.
  • Remove excess grout or residue from tile joints using sponges or trowels.

Grouting and Finishing
  • Apply grout between joints of tiles or other finish materials using grouting trowels.
  • Modify grouting, mixing, grinding, polishing, or cleaning procedures as required by installation needs.

Professional Conduct
  • Interact with clients and team members respectfully, representing Artisan Tile with professionalism and a commitment to high-quality work.

Site and Vehicle Maintenance
  • Maintain a clean, organized job site, ensuring all tools and materials are returned to their designated places.
  • Assist in keeping company vehicles orderly and stocked with necessary supplies.

Learning and Development
  • Work under the guidance of more experienced tile setters, actively developing new skills and understanding techniques.

Work Environment
  • Indoor and outdoor work with exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Working in client homes, commercial sites, and new construction environments.
  • Noise levels, dust, and other conditions typical of construction sites.

Safety and Compliance
  • Adherence to safety protocols and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Follow OSHA standards and company guidelines to ensure a safe work environment.
