Job Description:

Job Family Definition:

Our team is the HPE Synergy and In-Memory Compute hardware engineering team within HPE's Compute division. HPE Compute is a key division of HPE focused on providing computing solutions, from traditional servers to cutting-edge AI and edge computing solutions. HPE Compute delivers a wide range of hardware and software designed to handle diverse workloads, optimize performance, enhance security, and streamline management across various environments, including on-premises, hybrid cloud, and edge deployments.HPE servers are the backbone of most businesses and the internet. Servers provide services and resources to multiple clients simultaneously and feature high reliability, advanced processing power, and special features like error-correcting RAM and RAID storage. Servers have hot pluggable redundant fans and power supplies to ensure the server stays functional 24x7.

Management Level Definition:

We are the Synergy and In-Memory Compute Mechanical/Thermal Engineering team within the Compute division and our team is responsible for the mechanical and thermal design of Synergy compute and infrastructure and IMC servers. In addition to our mechanical and thermal design team, the larger team includes electrical engineering design and program management. The whole team is responsible for developing, validating, and delivering complete computer hardware designs into production.
HPE HST Campus is located in Spring, TX which is the primary location for the intern position. The campus has about 3,000 people working at it and is a new state-of-the-art campus all a full compliment of amenities.
Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for developing and delivering cost effective mechanical and cooling designs that are best in class mechanically, thermally and acoustically in support of server designs.

  • Working with system level design of mechanicals using CAD to design sheet metal and plastics and thermal designs using high performance fans, heatsinks, and baffles.

  • Daily use of materials science, and mechanical design skills.

  • The intern will be part of a program team that includes electrical, software, marketing and managers responsible for getting a server designed and delivered to HPE customers.

Education & Experience:

  • Currently working toward a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (BSME)

  • Good problem-solving skills

  • Works independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to understand and interpret Computational Fluid Dynamics reports

  • Understanding of microprocessor architecture and thermal profiles

  • Makes clear and effective presentations to inform and persuade

  • Communicates well verbally, in writing, and graphically

  • Computer literacy - spreadsheet, word processing, understanding of basic file structures, network, and web navigation familiarity

  • Ability to establish clear goals and formulate plans to achieve them

  • Excited about technology and has the desire to learn new tasks and technologies

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Fundamental understanding of PC architecture and components

  • Read and reproduce issues from a written description, work backward to isolate and diagnose problems

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills - communicating with various people in this R&D environment

  • Must be comfortable with OS/software installs and running and recording data in files, including MS Excel format input of results

  • Able to work with basic electronics testing tools including soldering, multi-meters.

  • Any thermal/environmental testing experience is a plus since electronic boards and components will be subjected to thermal testing in "ovens" to determine performance at various temperatures.

  • Must be able to work with various tools like drill presses, band saws, mills, lathes, etc. to modify computer chassis. This experience can be from a professional setting or from home use.
