Job description

Thermal Engineer

Who Are We:

Sceye is a high-growth technology company, building the next generation of instant communications, imaging and remote sensing infrastructure through stratospheric platforms. Our lighter-than-air high-altitude platform systems (LTA HAPS) are capable of maintaining position over an operational area in the stratosphere (altitudes of 18 โ€“ 21km). They can carry multiple telecommunications, imaging and remote sensing payloads, providing unique functionality, cost, environmental and societal advantages.

Our HAPS be deployed in a matter of days and at a fraction of the cost of traditional infrastructure solutions. This makes them an ideal solution for providing telecommunications connectivity, emergency solutions in the event of natural or other disasters, environmental and infrastructure monitoring, Earth observation and a range of defense applications.

Our customers & partners include some of the largest global telecommunications companies, infrastructure operators, climate researchers, civil and defense agencies. At Sceye, we aim high, and we want you to join us at the stratospheric edge of innovation. As part of our mission-driven team, youโ€™ll contribute to building breakthrough technologies that are changing the way we connect and observe the world. We are looking for individuals who bring not only deep expertise but also bold vision and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

About the Position:

Sceye is seeking a Thermal Engineer to join our Avionics Hardware (HW) team. This role is responsible for the thermal design, analysis, and validation of avionics hardware operating in a challenging stratospheric environment. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with electrical, mechanical, systems, and flight operations teams to ensure avionics performance, reliability, and safety across all mission phases.

What Weโ€™re Looking For:

  • Lead thermal analysis and design for avionics hardware, including PCBs, enclosures, and integrated avionics assemblies.
  • Develop and validate thermal models using analytical and numerical methods (e.g., conduction, convection, radiation).
  • Perform steady-state and transient thermal analyses to support design decisions and mission requirements.
  • Define thermal requirements and margins for avionics systems operating in high-altitude, low-pressure, and extreme temperature environments.
  • Support hardware layout and enclosure design to optimize heat dissipation and component placement.
  • Specify and evaluate thermal management solutions, including heat sinks, thermal interface materials (TIMs), coatings, and passive/active cooling approaches.
  • Plan, support, and analyze thermal testing (e.g., thermal vacuum, thermal cycling, environmental testing).
  • Correlate test results with models and update analyses as designs evolve.
  • Support design reviews (PDR, CDR) with clear documentation and technical presentations.
  • Collaborate with systems engineering to ensure thermal performance aligns with power, reliability, and mission requirements.
  • Contribute to failure analysis, root cause investigations, and corrective actions related to thermal issues.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in thermal engineering, preferably within aerospace, avionics, or high-reliability electronics.
  • Strong understanding of heat transfer principles (conduction, convection, radiation).
  • Experience performing thermal analysis of electronic hardware and assemblies.
  • Familiarity with thermal modeling and analysis tools (e.g., Thermal Desktop, SINDA/FLUINT, ANSYS, COMSOL, or equivalent).
  • Experience supporting environmental testing and correlating test data to analysis.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with electrical, mechanical, and systems engineers.
  • Strong documentation, communication, and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masterโ€™s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Experience with high-altitude, space, or near-space environments.
  • Knowledge of PCB thermal design and power electronics thermal management.
  • Experience with thermal vacuum (TVAC) testing and qualification programs.
  • Familiarity with aerospace standards and best practices for environmental qualification.
  • Hands-on experience with avionics hardware development from concept through flight.

What We Offer:

At Sceye, weโ€™re building more than high-altitude platformsโ€”weโ€™re building a workplace where people (and their pups) thrive. Hereโ€™s what youโ€™ll enjoy:

  • Chef-Prepared Lunches โ€“ Fresh, onsite meals to keep you fueled and focused.
  • Snacks & Refreshments โ€“ Enjoy a variety of snacks and drinks available throughout the day.
  • Wellness Perks โ€“ Access to a gym, pickleball court, and an outdoor dog kennel.
