What are some typical challenges faced by a Day Thermal Engineer and how are they addressed within a team setting?

Day Thermal Engineers often encounter challenges related to managing thermal loads and ensuring system components remain within safe operating temperatures, especially in dynamic environments such as manufacturing plants or data centers. To address these issues, engineers collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and controls teams to analyze real-time data, troubleshoot anomalies, and implement rapid solutions. Regular team meetings and clear communication channels are essential, as they allow for swift sharing of insights and coordinated responses to any emerging problems, helping maintain optimal system performance and safety.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Day Thermal Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Day Thermal Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or thermal engineering, heat transfer, and thermodynamics, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with thermal simulation software (such as ANSYS or COMSOL), CAD tools, and possibly certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) can be highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and presenting technical findings. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate thermal analysis, effective system design, and reliable project outcomes in industries where temperature control and thermal management are critical.

What is the difference between Day Thermal Engineer vs Night Thermal Engineer?

AspectDay Thermal EngineerNight Thermal Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in Mechanical or Thermal Engineering, relevant certificationsSame as Day Thermal Engineer
Work EnvironmentStandard daytime hours, office or lab settingNight shifts, similar environments
Industry UsageCommon in manufacturing, HVAC, automotive industriesLess common, used in 24/7 operations like data centers or manufacturing plants

The main difference between a Day Thermal Engineer and a Night Thermal Engineer lies in their work shifts. Both roles require similar qualifications and work in comparable environments, but they operate during different times of the day to support continuous operations or specific project needs.

What does a Day Thermal Engineer do?

A Day Thermal Engineer is responsible for managing and optimizing thermal systems and processes during daytime operations in various industries, such as manufacturing, energy, or technology. They analyze heat transfer, energy efficiency, and thermal performance to ensure systems run safely and effectively. Their tasks may include designing thermal management solutions, troubleshooting temperature-related issues, and collaborating with other engineers to improve product or process performance. Day Thermal Engineers often focus on maintaining comfortable and efficient working environments or optimizing equipment that operates primarily during the day.

Job Description:
Are you a passionate and innovative Thermal Engineer looking to help develop state of the art aircraft? Are you eager to make a positive difference in the world? Do you want to work alongside mission driven and values focused teammates?  Shield AI is just the place for you!
As a Thermal Engineer at Shield AI, you will lead the design, analysis, and integration of aircraft avionics thermal management systems. We are designing a high voltage, high power system using custom power electronics and energy storage. This role is best suited for an engineer who thrives on first-principles problem solving, is comfortable with design challenges, and values extreme ownership. The engineer will be a key contributor in ensuring robust thermal solutions that meet mission-critical aerospace requirements.

What you'll do:
  • Own thermal analysis and design efforts for unmanned aerial vehicle avionics including custom power electronics
  • Develop and validate analytical, numerical, and computational models for heat transfer and fluid flow using hand calculations and CFD tools such as FloEFD
  • Provide input to trade studies, system architecture decisions, and risk assessments
  • Assist cross-functional teams designing power electronic circuits and environmental enclosures
  • Contribute to design requirements that impact circuit part selection, board layout, material selection, and other design aspects
  • Drive test planning, instrumentation, and data analysis to correlate models with experimental results
  • Communicate technical findings clearly through executive-level briefings, design reviews, and written reports
  • Proactively identify risks, propose solutions, and influence electrical and/or PCBA design direction
Required qualifications:
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related discipline
  • Internship or engineering club experience in avionics or electronics thermal engineering
  • Knowledge of heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation) and fluid mechanics
  • Familiarity with thermal analysis and CFD tools (e.g., ANSYS Icepak, FloEFD, STAR-CCM+)
  • Experience with CAD design tools such as NX, SolidWorks, or similar
  • Demonstrated experience applying first-principles reasoning to engineering problems
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of leading technical discussions and presenting to stakeholders
  • Proven ability to learn and adapt quickly to new tools, processes, and technical challenges in a fast paced, startup environment
  • Ability to obtain a S//SAR level security clearance desired.
