Job description

Fisher College, a private 4-year institution located in the Back Bay section of Boston is seeking one (01) adjunct instructor to teach a Microbiology class for the Fall 2026 semester. The HE213 Microbiology course requires 01 lecture, and 2 lab sessions, and it will be taught from August 17, 2026, through December 11, 2026 (please note that the College will observe Thanksgiving Break during the entire week of November 23rd).  Additional time is required for training, course prep, grading, and student communications.

Overview and Responsibilities:

This course is designed for nursing students and emphasis is placed on the role of the healthcare professional in the prevention of infectious disease.  Class lectures correlate the structure, function, growth, and development of microorganisms to the modes of action of various antimicrobials and physical and chemical methods of microbial control.  The student will survey causative agents, methods of transmission, mechanisms of pathogenicity, signs and symptoms, diagnoses, and treatments for common and emerging infectious diseases.  The innate and adaptive defense mechanisms of the host will be explored.  Laboratory deals with the use of the microscope, aseptic techniques, antibiotic resistance, antibiotic susceptibility, and the physiological, nutritional, and environmental needs of microbes.  In addition, peer-reviewed journals will be used to prepare presentations on current topics in microbiology.

Learning Objectives:

This course will provide students with the opportunity to:

  1. Differentiate among the classifications of microorganisms.
  2. Correlate the structure, growth, and development of microorganisms to:
    1. physical and chemical methods of control
    2. mode of action of antimicrobial drugs
    3. innate and adaptive defense mechanisms of the host.
  3. Describe the mechanisms of pathogenicity of common/newly emerging microorganisms.
  4. Explain the infectious disease cycle and the role of the health care professional in the prevention of healthcare-acquired infections.
  5. Apply microbiological principles/techniques acquired in the classroom/lab to the clinical setting.

All classes and labs are in person

Thursday or Friday   10:00a – 12:00p (lab 1), 12:30p – 3:30p (lecture), and 3:45p – 5:45p (lab 2)

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a master’s degree in health sciences or related field
  • Minimum of 2 years of college level science teaching experience
  • Knowledge of Canvas preferred. Also, McGraw Hill CONNECT
