What are testing jobs?

Testing jobs involve evaluating software, products, or systems to ensure they meet the required standards and function as intended. Individuals in these roles identify bugs, defects, or inconsistencies and work closely with development teams to resolve issues. Testing can be manual or automated and is essential for maintaining quality, improving user experience, and reducing future maintenance costs. Common titles include Quality Assurance (QA) Tester, Software Tester, and Test Engineer.

What are some common challenges faced by software testers, and how can they overcome them?

Software testers often encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, rapidly changing requirements, and limited information about the product. To overcome these issues, testers can prioritize effective communication with developers and product managers, leverage test automation tools to increase efficiency, and stay adaptable by continuously updating their testing strategies. Proactively seeking clarification and documenting test cases also helps minimize misunderstandings and ensures thorough coverage.

What is the difference between Testing vs Quality Assurance?

AspectTestingQuality Assurance
Primary FocusIdentifying defects in softwarePreventing defects through process improvement
ActivitiesExecuting test cases, bug reportingDeveloping standards, process audits
CredentialsTesting certifications (e.g., ISTQB)Quality management certifications (e.g., Six Sigma)
Work EnvironmentTest labs, software environmentsProcess documentation, meetings

Testing and Quality Assurance are closely related but serve different roles. Testing focuses on finding defects in software, while Quality Assurance aims to improve processes to prevent defects. Both are essential for delivering high-quality products, with Testing being more execution-oriented and QA emphasizing process improvement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Tester, you need a solid understanding of software development life cycles, test case design, and debugging, usually supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with automated testing tools like Selenium, JIRA, and knowledge of scripting languages are typically required, along with certifications such as ISTQB. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help testers identify issues and collaborate effectively with development teams. These skills are vital for ensuring software reliability, quality, and timely delivery in fast-paced tech environments.

With over 900 talented people our shared purpose and core beliefs are to be #FIERCE about Protecting Lives. It's why we come to work - and it's what motivates us, every day, to do the best work we can.
Purpose of Position
Team Wendy is seeking a driven, detail-oriented Testing Technician to support the engineering team in the design, development, validation, and continuous improvement of helmet products. This role executes hands-on technical work across development and sustainment activities, including coordinating and assembling product samples, building prototypes, supporting test execution and validation, performing process inspections, and assisting with prototype tooling development and installation. The position also supports quality assurance testing and validation of process changes to ensure product performance and manufacturing stability. The Testing Technician reports to the Continuous Product Improvement Manager.
Successful execution requires a working knowledge of manufacturing processes, test methods, and engineering fundamentals, combined with the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, multi-project environment. This position requires strong ownership, disciplined execution, and the ability to shift priorities while maintaining output quality. High-performing candidates demonstrate self-direction, technical curiosity, and consistent contribution to cross-functional team outcomes.
Role Purpose
  • Execute product testing activities to validate performance, durability, and compliance against internal and external standards
  • Support development testing, qualification testing, and QA verification activities across new and existing helmet products
  • Perform environmental, mechanical, impact, and ballistic testing
  • Prepare, assemble, and document test samples, including prototype builds and pre-production units
  • Set up, operate, and maintain testing equipment; ensure calibration status and proper usage
  • Collect, record, and organize test data with high accuracy and traceability
  • Analyze test results at a basic level and escalate anomalies, failures, or trends to engineering
  • Generate clear, structured test reports to support engineering decisions and program milestones
  • Coordinate with engineering, QA, and production to prioritize and execute testing aligned to project timelines
  • Build and modify prototypes, fixtures, and test setups to support development and validation needs
  • Coordinate materials, components, and hardware required for builds and testing activities
  • Maintain test labs, workspaces, and equipment in a controlled and organized state
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and ensure safe execution of testing and build activities
  • Identify opportunities to improve test methods, efficiency, repeatability, and data quality
  • Other duties as assigned

Desired Skills
  • Experience executing blunt impact and shock attenuation testing (drop towers, guided impact systems, headforms)
  • Familiarity with ballistic testing setups, sample preparation, and controlled range procedures
  • Understanding of energy transfer, force-time responses, and failure modes in protective systems
  • Experience with high-speed data acquisition, accelerometers, load cells, and instrumentation for impact events
  • Working knowledge of test standards relevant to helmets and protective systems (NIJ, ACH, AR/PD, MIL-STD impact protocols)
  • Ability to interpret impact and ballistic test data, including peak acceleration, impulse, and penetration/backface deformation results
  • Experience setting up and calibrating mechanical test systems, fixtures, and repeatable impact conditions
  • Hands-on experience with prototype fabrication and modification for impact and ballistic evaluation (composites, polymers, assemblies)

What We Offer:
  • Flexible Schedule
  • Competitive Compensation Package
