What is a test manager?

A test manager works in a software development and quality assurance setting, managing testing projects and resources to ensure that software works correctly before being released to the public. Your chief responsibilities and duties are to oversee a team of software quality assurance testers throughout the development life cycle, design and implement testing strategies, create reports and analyses of your tests, and present your findings to software developers and management. You are also responsible for hiring new testers, building your team, and helping to mentor and monitor junior testers.

What are some common challenges test managers face when coordinating testing across multiple teams or projects?

Test Managers often navigate challenges such as aligning testing schedules, managing resource constraints, and ensuring consistent quality standards across diverse teams or projects. Effective communication and implementing standardized testing processes are key to overcoming these obstacles. Additionally, they must frequently balance shifting project priorities and resolve dependencies or conflicts between development and testing teams. Leveraging strong leadership and collaborative skills helps Test Managers ensure seamless test execution and project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Test Manager, you need deep knowledge of software testing methodologies, quality assurance processes, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with test management tools (such as Jira, HP ALM, or TestRail), automation frameworks, and certifications like ISTQB are highly valued. Strong leadership, excellent communication, and problem-solving skills help coordinate teams and bridge gaps between stakeholders. These abilities ensure effective test planning, high product quality, and successful delivery in complex software projects.

What is the difference between Test Manager vs QA Analyst?

Job description

Position Summary
The Mechanical Engineering Verification Test Engineer is responsible for planning, developing, and executing verification and validation (V&V) testing for complex electromechanical systems from prototype through production release. In this role, you will own the verification strategy for mechanical and mechatronic subsystems, including actuation, sensors, control hardware, and integrated systems. You will work closely with Mechanical, Electrical, Software, and Manufacturing Engineering teams to ensure designs meet functional, performance, reliability, and regulatory requirements.
This role requires demonstrated hands-on experience with mechatronic systems, including PLC programming, controls integration, instrumentation, and automated test systems. You will take ownership of test architecture, develop robust test methods, and drive issues to resolution through data-driven analysis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Own the mechanical and mechatronic verification test strategy across product platforms
  • Develop system-level and subsystem-level verification plans, test matrices, and acceptance criteria based on product requirements
  • Translate high-level product and system requirements into clear, traceable, and testable verification requirements
  • Design, build, and commission test fixtures, rigs, and automated test equipment
  • Program and maintain PLCs and control systems used in verification testing (motion control, actuation, sensors, safety interlocks, data acquisition)
  • Integrate mechanical hardware with electrical controls, instrumentation, and software for closed-loop testing
  • Write, review, and execute Engineering Verification Test (EVT), Design Verification Test (DVT), and Production Validation Test (PVT) procedures
  • Develop automated test scripts and control logic to improve test repeatability, throughput, and data quality
  • Perform structural, thermal, vibration, life cycle, and environmental testing as required
  • Analyze test data, identify failure modes, and drive corrective actions with design teams
  • Act as the primary point of contact for mechanical verification activities across cross-functional teams
  • Support supplier and third-party testing, including test definition, witnessing, and result review
  • Provide guidance on design-for-test (DFT) best practices early in the design cycle
  • Maintain accurate documentation, test reports, and traceability within the PLM and requirements management systems
  • Support manufacturing bring-up, end-of-line testing, and root-cause analysis for production issues

Required Qualifications
  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or related field
  • 8+ years' experience testing electromechanical and mechatronic systems
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, tolerancing, materials, and failure mechanisms
  • Hands-on experience with PLC programming and data acquisition systems
  • Experience with motion control systems, actuators, motors, encoders, sensors, and safety circuits
  • Experience developing automated or semi-automated test systems
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks or similar CAD tools for fixture and test equipment design
  • Experience using lab equipment for mechanical and system testing (load frames, shakers, thermal chambers, instrumentation, etc.)
  • Knowledge of verification methodologies, requirements traceability, and structured test processes
  • Ability to work effectively across Mechanical, Electrical, Software, and Manufacturing teams
  • Familiarity with FMEA, root cause analysis, and reliability testing
  • Experience supporting both R&D and production environments

Additional Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with UAVs, robotics, industrial automation, or complex electromechanical products

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Must be able to walk, stand, and navigate large indoor and outdoor facilities for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment weighing up to 25 lbs on a regular basis.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required in designated areas or when performing specific tasks, in accordance with safety protocols and company policy.
  • May be required to climb ladders, stoop, kneel, or crouch during inspections, maintenance walk-throughs, or emergency response situations.
  • Regular exposure to facility operations including noise, dust, temperature fluctuations, and industrial equipment.
  • Occasional off-hours or weekend work required for emergency facility responses or projects as needed
  • Requires frequent use of a computer and other standard office equipment for documentation, communication, and coordination tasks.
