What is a software quality engineer?

Software Quality Engineers are professionals responsible for ensuring that software products meet established quality standards before they are released to customers. They design and execute tests, identify bugs or issues, and collaborate with developers to resolve problems. Their work helps prevent defects, enhances user satisfaction, and ensures the reliability and safety of software applications. Software Quality Engineers may use automation tools and manual testing methods to validate functionality, performance, and security.

How does a software quality engineer typically collaborate with development and product teams to ensure high-quality releases?

As a Software Quality Engineer, you’ll work closely with developers and product managers throughout the software development lifecycle. Regular collaboration involves participating in sprint planning, reviewing requirements, designing test cases, and providing feedback on user stories. You’ll also be responsible for communicating defects clearly, suggesting improvements, and validating fixes, ensuring everyone is aligned on quality goals. This close teamwork ensures that issues are caught early and that the final product meets both technical and user expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software quality engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Quality Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development lifecycles, test methodologies, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automated testing tools (like Selenium or JUnit), bug tracking systems (such as Jira), and scripting languages is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and strong communication are vital soft skills that set top performers apart. These abilities ensure software products meet high standards for reliability and functionality, reducing defects and improving user satisfaction.

What is the difference between Software Quality Engineer vs Software Tester?

AspectSoftware Quality EngineerSoftware Tester
Primary FocusEnsuring overall quality, process improvement, and defect preventionIdentifying bugs and verifying software functionality
ResponsibilitiesDeveloping quality strategies, automating tests, collaborating with teamsExecuting test cases, reporting bugs, manual testing
Required SkillsTesting tools, automation, quality assurance processesManual testing, test case execution, defect tracking
Work EnvironmentCollaborative, cross-functional teams in software developmentPrimarily testing teams or QA departments

While both roles focus on software quality, Software Quality Engineers take a broader approach, emphasizing process improvement and automation, whereas Software Testers mainly focus on executing tests and identifying bugs. The roles often overlap but serve different stages of the quality assurance process.

Job description

As a Software Quality Engineer at LifeVantage, you will help redefine how quality engineering is practiced across our technology organization. This role is for a hands-on engineer who uses automation, AI, data, and modern engineering practices to dramatically increase the speed, coverage, and intelligence of our quality processes. Working within cross-functional product teams, you will partner closely with Engineering, Product, Architecture, DevOps, and business stakeholders to build quality into the software development lifecycle, reduce reliance on repetitive manual testing, accelerate feedback, and continuously improve customer and consultant experiences. You will be expected to challenge traditional QA approaches, evaluate emerging technologies, and help move the organization toward an AI enabled, automation first quality engineering model.

Core Qualifications

5+ years of software quality engineering, SDET, or test automation experience in modern Agile product development environments

Strong software engineering mindset with demonstrated experience operating as an SDET, quality engineer, or automation engineer who can design and build production grade test solutions

Strong understanding of modern quality engineering practices, including shift left testing, risk-based testing, test pyramid strategy, continuous testing, and quality ownership across the delivery lifecycle

Hands-on experience integrating quality workflows with modern engineering platforms such as Jira, Azure DevOps, Bitbucket, test management platforms, and CI/CD tooling

Demonstrated expertise architecting, coding, and evolving scalable automated test frameworks with a focus on maintainability, reliability, speed, reuse, and measurable reduction of manual regression effort

Hands-on experience with modern web and mobile automation frameworks such as Playwright, Cypress, Appium, Selenium, Mabl, or equivalent, including experience selecting the right tool for the problem

Strong API and integration testing experience, including REST APIs, automated service level validation, contract testing concepts, and testing of asynchronous or event driven integrations

Experience testing third-party integrations & interconnected systems

Experience mentoring engineers, raising automation capability across a team, and influencing developers and product teams to share ownership for quality

Strong analytical and systems thinking skills with the ability to identify the highest risk areas, prioritize automation investments, and solve complex quality problems

Metrics driven approach to quality using measures such as automation coverage, escaped defects, defect detection stage, test execution time, flaky test rate, failure patterns, release confidence, and manual effort eliminated

Deep understanding of functional, integration, regression, system, end to end, performance, accessibility, and resilience testing, with sound judgment about where each type creates the most value

Hands-on experience embedding automated tests and quality gates into CI/CD pipelines, with an understanding of deployment strategies, environment management, observability, and modern DevOps practices

Experience testing e-commerce applications, including Shopify storefronts, checkout flows, payment integrations, promotions, subscriptions, & customer account functionality

Demonstrated hands-on use of generative AI or AI assisted engineering tools to improve test design, generate and maintain automation code, create synthetic test data, analyze failures, identify coverage gaps, accelerate root cause analysis, and improve quality reporting

Experience building or optimizing AI enabled quality workflows, including practical understanding of where AI can safely automate work, where human validation remains important, and how to measure productivity and quality gains from AI adoption

Skills & Differentiators

Experience defining an enterprise quality automation strategy and evolving frameworks that support fast, reliable testing across multiple products, platforms, and teams

Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences

Self-motivated, analytical, & creative problem solver

Strong knowledge of automation architecture, testability, coding standards, reusable test components, test data strategy, and techniques for preventing brittle or flaky automation

Mobile application testing experience across Android & iOS platforms

Ability to work independently & collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

Adaptability to change priorities & business needs

Demonstrated curiosity and a track record of evaluating, prototyping, and adopting emerging QA, automation, and AI technologies that measurably improve quality, speed, or team productivity

Exposure to direct-selling, network marketing, subscription commerce, or multi-level marketing industries

What You’ll Do

Partner with Engineering, Product, Architecture, DevOps, and business teams to make quality an engineering responsibility from design through production

Create risk-based quality strategies that emphasize automated coverage, exploratory testing, and concise living documentation rather than documentation for its own sake

Improve testability by advancing test environments, synthetic and reusable test data, service virtualization or mocking where appropriate, and modern QA tooling

Design, code, and maintain automated testing solutions across web, mobile, API, integration, and data layers, with automation executed continuously through CI/CD

Establish scalable automation standards, quality gates, dashboards, and metrics that provide actionable insight into release risk, automation effectiveness, and engineering productivity

Use automation, telemetry, logs, and AI assisted analysis to identify defects quickly, improve root cause insight, and partner with Engineering through resolution and prevention

Develop intelligent test scenarios using risk, production usage, system architecture, and data to prioritize the highest value functional and nonfunctional coverage

Help define objective release readiness criteria and automate quality signals so teams can make faster, evidence-based release decisions

Engineer automated end to end and integration coverage for Shopify based commerce experiences, including checkout, payments, promotions, subscriptions, customer accounts, and third-party integrations, while minimizing slow and brittle end to end tests

Uphold company, legal, security, & compliance standards

Continuously identify opportunities to replace repetitive manual QA work with automation, AI, improved testability, or better engineering practices, and help the broader QA team adopt those capabilities
