What is test driven development?

Test Driven Development (TDD) is a software development approach where tests are written before the actual code. In TDD, developers first write a test for a small piece of functionality, see it fail, and then write the minimum code needed to pass the test. This cycle of writing tests and code continues until the software is complete. TDD helps ensure code quality, reduces bugs, and makes the codebase easier to maintain and refactor.

What are some common challenges developers face when implementing test driven development in a team setting?

One common challenge when adopting TDD as a team is ensuring everyone consistently writes tests before code, especially under tight deadlines. Teams may also face difficulties in reaching agreement on testing standards and maintaining test suite quality as the codebase grows. Additionally, integrating TDD into existing projects with legacy code can be complex and time-consuming. Open communication, regular code reviews, and continuous learning are key to overcoming these hurdles and fostering a productive TDD culture.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test driven development developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Test Driven Development (TDD) Developer, you need strong programming skills, deep understanding of software testing principles, and familiarity with TDD methodologies, often backed by a degree in computer science or related experience. Proficiency in unit testing frameworks (such as JUnit, NUnit, or pytest), version control systems like Git, and continuous integration tools is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are valuable soft skills that help in writing maintainable code and collaborating with team members. These competencies ensure high-quality, robust software delivery and facilitate rapid, reliable development cycles.

What is the difference between Test Driven Development vs Software Tester?

AspectTest Driven DevelopmentSoftware Tester
Primary FocusWriting tests before code to guide developmentExecuting tests to verify software functionality
Skills RequiredProgramming, testing frameworks, coding best practicesTesting techniques, bug tracking, manual and automated testing
Work EnvironmentDevelopment teams, coding environmentsQuality assurance teams, testing labs
CertificationsNone specific, programming certifications helpfulISTQB, CSTE, testing certifications

Test Driven Development (TDD) involves developers writing tests before coding to ensure quality from the start, focusing on code correctness and maintainability. Software Testers primarily execute and design tests to identify bugs and verify features. While TDD is integrated into the development process, Software Testers focus on validation and quality assurance. Both roles are essential for delivering reliable software but differ in their approach and responsibilities.

How to get started with test driven development?

To get started with test driven development (TDD), learn the TDD cycle of writing a failing test, developing code to pass the test, and refactoring. Use testing frameworks like JUnit or pytest and practice writing small, incremental tests before implementing features to ensure code quality and reliability.

Why You'll Love This Opportunity
This isn't a traditional QA Automation role.
Our client is seeking an engineer who is passionate about building high-quality software through modern automation, thoughtful engineering practices, and continuous improvement.
You'll work alongside software developers as an integral member of an Agile delivery team while designing scalable automation frameworks, improving CI/CD pipelines, mentoring teammates, and helping define the future direction of software quality.
If you're looking for an opportunity where your technical expertise is valued just as much as your testing experience, this is the role you've been waiting for.
Job Description
Our client, a financially strong enterprise organization, is seeking an experienced Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to support a high-profile Agile product team responsible for customer-facing financial applications.
This position is ideal for an experienced automation engineer who enjoys writing code, solving technical challenges, improving automation frameworks, and collaborating closely with developers throughout the software development lifecycle.
Rather than simply executing automated test scripts, you'll help design and implement enterprise automation solutions while influencing quality engineering practices across the team.
Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain enterprise automation frameworks
  • Build scalable UI, API, and integration automation solutions
  • Lead automation strategy and promote Quality Engineering best practices
  • Develop automated testing within CI/CD pipelines
  • Design comprehensive regression, integration, and system testing strategies
  • Create and execute both automated and manual test cases
  • Perform automation code reviews and peer reviews
  • Troubleshoot complex automation issues and improve framework reliability
  • Collaborate closely with software developers, Product Owners, and Agile teams
  • Mentor junior QA engineers and promote engineering best practices
  • Research and evaluate emerging testing technologies, automation tools, and AI-assisted development capabilities
  • Drive continuous improvement across quality engineering processes
Qualifications & Requirements
Required
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of hands-on UI and API automation experience
  • 5+ years of programming experience using JavaScript, TypeScript and/or Java
  • Strong expertise with Playwright
  • Experience developing automation frameworks
  • Experience testing REST APIs and microservices
  • Experience integrating automation into CI/CD pipelines
  • Strong understanding of Agile software development
  • Experience with GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities
Preferred
Experience with:
  • Selenium
  • Cypress
  • Postman
  • Swagger
  • BrowserStack
  • Performance testing
  • Regression testing
  • Integration testing
  • Test-Driven Development (TDD)
  • Behavior-Driven Development (BDD)
  • AI-assisted software development tools such as GitHub Copilot
  • Financial services or other highly regulated environments
What Will Make You Successful
This opportunity is best suited for engineers who enjoy building automation—not simply executing it.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals
  • Ability to independently design and troubleshoot automation solutions
  • Passion for writing clean, maintainable automation code
  • Experience mentoring teammates and sharing technical knowledge
  • Strong understanding of APIs, microservices, and distributed applications
  • Ability to explain the reasoning behind technical decisions—not simply rely on generated code
  • Curiosity around emerging AI-assisted development and testing technologies
  • Commitment to improving software quality across the entire development lifecycle
Benefits & Perks
  • Competitive salary of $120,000 - $135,000
  • 7.5% annual incentive bonus
  • Flexible PTO program
  • 401(k) with company match

  • Paid Holidays
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Hybrid work environment
  • Long-term career growth
  • Collaborative Agile engineering culture
Your New Organization
You'll join an established enterprise technology organization committed to investing in modern engineering practices, automation, and continuous improvement. Quality Engineers are viewed as software engineers who partner closely with development teams to improve reliability, scalability, and delivery speed—not simply testers at the end of the development process.
You'll have the opportunity to influence automation strategy, mentor teammates, and help drive the organization's continued investment in Quality Engineering and AI-assisted software development.
Work Authorization
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Sponsorship is not available now or in the future. Third-party and C2C candidates cannot be considered.
