Job description

Description Title: Graduate Research Assistant Position Number: 0000GA11 Hiring Unit: John A. Burns School of Medicine / Dept of Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology Location: School of Medicine (Kaka'ako campus) Date Posted: September 17, 2021 Closing Date: Continuous recruitment; first review on September 24, 2021 Salary Information: $22,140 annual ($1845 monthly) Monthly Type: 11 Month Full Time/Part Time: Part Time - Full Time Equivalency: 50% Temporary/Permanent: Temporary - Not to Exceed: December 17, 2021 Other Conditions: On federal funds, to begin approximately September 2021 subject to position clearance and availability of funds. Renewal dependent on performance, departmental needs and/or funding availability.

Duties and Responsibilities: Employ cell and molecular biological techniques in the isolation of novel viruses from archival tissues. Observe and record data of all laboratory and experimental work, including computer input and analysis. Assist with laboratory maintenance and inventory and IBC protocols.

Prepare experimental data for presentation and assist in writing manuscripts for publications. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Biology or Microbiology or a related field from an accredited institution.

Classified University of Hawaii graduate student in Tropical Medicine, Cell and Molecular Biology, Microbiology or Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering graduate program in good academic standing. Basic knowledge of cell biology, molecular biology, infectious diseases, and working with small animals. Ability to apply basic laboratory techniques to answer research questions and write scientific reports.

Ability to organize tasks and to work independently. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Desirable Qualifications: Experience conducting cell and molecular biology-related research and in handling pathogen-infected biological specimens.

Specific experience in the maintenance of newly developed cell lines and in the isolation of mammalian viruses.
