Position Summary

This Intern II position is a part-time paid internship with the Research & Development department where the candidate will gain experience with independent study execution under the supervision of scientists and research associates on day-to-day Biosafety level 1 (BSL-1) laboratory techniques, molecular cloning, western blot, plasmid isolation, PCR, and quantitative PCR (qPCR). The candidate will be able to interact with all the group directors, scientists and other research staff. This role offers experienced undergraduate researchers an opportunity to advance beyond foundational training and expand their understanding of laboratory operations, transitioning into a more independent role with a focus on experimental design, data analysis and presentation.

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to company work hours, policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to company policies governing confidentiality and the handling of confidential information.
  • Contribute to inventory management and lab operations projects such as reorganization of supply rooms, etc.
  • Observe and train in lab safety concepts.
  • Present data and findings in department lab meetings.
  • Lead independent research project or own specific workstreams within larger team-based studies.
  • Independently execute molecular biology experiments with guidance from supervisor.
  • Prepare for and utilize opportunities of learning such as presentations, lectures and conferences afforded by the company.
  • Submit on time and with consistency all work assignments to the internship supervisor.
  • Provide internship supervisor with periodic progress reports as needed.

Education & Experience

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or Bioengineering required
  • Completion of introductory biology and general chemistry courses
  • Completion of at least one molecular biology or genetics course (or equivalent lab experience)
  • Prior research experience in an academic or industry laboratory setting preferred

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Fundamental principles of molecular biology, including PCR and/or Western Blot techniques
  • Solution preparation, dilution calculations, and basic statistical analysis
  • Proficient pipetting with accuracy and precision
  • Able to translate academic knowledge to industry laboratory setting
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-motivated with strong work ethic and attention to detail
  • Able to take direction, multi-task, and adapt to changing priorities
  • Able to work in a team
  • Proficient in PowerPoint, Word and Excel
  • Conducts self professionally with a courteous, enthusiastic and critical approach to assignments

Working Environment / Physical Environment

  • Working environment is onsite in a research lab space equipped with biosafety cabinets for cell culture and equipment sufficient to complete the tasks described above.
  • The lab environment will include potential exposure to BSL-2 due to Adenovirus work that occasionally occurs onsite. This position will be learning BSL-1 techniques.
  • Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer.
  • Lift and carry materials weighing up to 20 pounds.

This position is eligible for a discretionary bonus and equity award. The hourly base pay range for this position is below. The specific rate will depend on the successful candidate's qualifications, prior experience as well as geographic location.

$20.00 per hour (Part time / 20 hours per week)
