TEMPORARY SUMMER WORK  VACANCY
 POSTING DATE: March 31, 2026



POSITION:








Summer 2026 - Temporary Summer Groundsman 
(multiple positions available)
 

8 hours per day - 40 hours per week (Monday-Friday)
Summer work dates: Earliest Mid-May to late August / early September
Work Hours: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm (Monday - Friday)
                      (shift includes a 30-minute unpaid lunch)
This position is not benefit eligible due to temporary status.

District-wide coverage needs throughout the work day.

REQUIREMENTS





Good knowledge of ground maintenance work including procedures and practices as well as tools and equipment operations; ability to operate hand, power and motorized grounds tools and equipment in a safe manner; willingness to perform manual labor; mechanical aptitude; health commensurate with demands of the position. A Class "D" driver's license is required. 



QUALIFICATIONS:
 

  • Applicants must be 18 years or older (due to equipment used).
  • Possession of a valid New York State Class "D" Driver's License
  • Fingerprint clearance is required for any WICSD employment.

The fingerprinting cost is the responsibility of the applicant at the time of hire


SALARY:
 

$16.00 per hour - $16.00 per hour (no hourly shift differential)

General Civil Service Description
Groundsman (also referred to as Grounds Equipment Operator)

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:


This is an important grounds maintenance position involving upkeep of lawns, turf grass, trees, shrubs, flowerbeds, sidewalks, driveways, and building exteriors. This employee may operate grounds motorized equipment or light-weight trucks in tending the lawns and in hauling materials and refuse. Work involves manual labor and is performed under various weather conditions including extremes of heat and cold, humidity, or inclement conditions. When assigned to the County Parks Department, Grounds Equipment Operators may be subject to working evening hours relating to golf course irrigation or related functions. Effective communication with customers is paramount for both safety and courtesy when operating equipment at a busy time. The Grounds Equipment Operator works under general supervision from, and reports directly to, a higher-ranking employee. Direct supervision may be exercised over full-time, part-time, or seasonal laborers. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed.)


1. Waters golf course turf playing surfaces (night shift);
2. Cleans shelters, lodges, restrooms and related support facilities;
3. Mows lawns and trims and edges around walks, flowerbeds, walls, fences, hedges, trees and shrubs;
4. Prunes trees and shrubs;
5. Plants, waters, fertilizes and weeds grass, flowers, trees and shrubs;
6. Rakes leaves, picks up brush and litter;
7. Plows or shovels snow and spreads salt on walkways, steps, driveways, crossings, or rinks;
8. Repairs and paints fences, gates, walks, walls, tables, benches, and guardrails;
9. Installs playground and athletic equipment;
10. Builds athletic fields;
11. Cleans out gutters, drainage ditches, culverts, and catch basins;
12. Operates manual, power tools and equipment;
13. Operates light trucks to deliver supplies and cart debris, loads and unloads trucks;
14. Operates a variety of tractors and small equipment for moving and general transport;
15. Performs minor preventive maintenance tasks on grounds equipment or vehicles.
16. May mark, reline or layout athletic fields.
