Position: Track Operations Intern
Department:
Track Operations
Reports To: Track Operations Manager & Coordinators
Location: Charlotte Motor Speedway
Time Frame: February - May 2027

Who We Are

Charlotte Motor Speedway is the heart of Speedway Motorsports’ nationwide network of entertainment venues. The company maintains a consistent focus on four core principles:

  • Take care of teammates
  • Be known for remarkable events
  • Positively impact the community
  • Profitably improve

The ideal candidate will adopt a GLOBE mentality. GLOBE stands for Generously Lending Our Best Efforts. This is done by holding themselves and their teammates accountable for taking our best practices “the last mile” – optimizing them for maximum value to all of our stakeholders while sharing insights on how to improve our company. The ideal candidate will also be a productive and proactive self-starter who is passionate about his/her duties and willing to put forth the extra effort to achieve excellence.

Position Summary

The Track Operations Intern will gain hands-on experience supporting the daily operations of one of the premier motorsports facilities in the world. This internship is designed for current college students or recent graduates looking to build a career in motorsports, sports management, venue operations, or event management.

Interns will assist with the day-to-day responsibilities that keep Charlotte Motor Speedway operating while also being exposed to the planning, coordination, and leadership required to execute major events. Throughout the internship, the selected candidate will work alongside experienced professionals and gain insight into the operational decision-making behind NASCAR race weekends, track rentals, concerts, and other special events.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist the Track Operations team with daily facility preparation and event setup.
  • Help install, move, and maintain barriers, signage, cones, fencing, and other operational equipment.
  • Assist with race weekend setup and post-event cleanup activities.
  • Support track rental operations by preparing equipment and ensuring customer areas are ready for use.
  • Perform facility walkthroughs to identify housekeeping, maintenance, or operational needs.
  • Assist with organizing equipment, supplies, and inventory within the Track Operations department.
  • Help maintain operational vehicles and equipment under staff supervision.
  • Collect information and assist with updating maps, checklists, and operational documents.
  • Support special projects and facility improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with basic administrative tasks, including data entry, document preparation, and event planning materials.
  • Attend operational meetings, planning sessions, and post-event debriefs to gain an understanding of event management and decision-making.
  • Shadow department leaders during NASCAR race weekends and major events to learn how large-scale operations are coordinated.
  • Observe interactions with sanctioning bodies, vendors, contractors, and other Speedway departments.
  • Complete additional duties and special projects as assigned.

Learning Opportunities

The internship is structured to provide meaningful exposure to both hands-on operations and management-level planning. Interns will have opportunities to learn about:

  • Event planning and operational logistics
  • NASCAR race weekend preparation and execution
  • Facility management and venue operations
  • Cross-functional coordination with Fire & EMS, Security, Guest Services, Competition, and Facility Maintenance
  • Incident management and operational problem solving
  • Budgeting, project planning, and resource allocation
  • Leadership and communication within a major sports venue
  • Career development and networking within the motorsports industry

Qualifications

  • Current college student or recent graduate pursuing a degree in Sports Management, Event Management, Motorsports, Business Administration, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong work ethic with a willingness to learn.
  • Positive attitude and ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow direction while taking initiative when appropriate.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Interest in motorsports, live events, or facility operations preferred.
  • Valid driver's license preferred.

Schedule

This position requires a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours during NASCAR race weekends and other major events.

Interns are expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week plus all events held during the semester, including nights and weekend as necessary. During this time, working hours will average 30 hours per week and some event weeks with 40 hours and overtime.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to safely operate utility vehicles and equipment after receiving training.

Professional Development

Throughout the internship, participants will receive exposure to the operational planning process by attending department meetings, participating in post-event reviews, and working directly with Operations leadership. Interns will have opportunities to ask questions, contribute ideas, and gain insight into the decision-making that supports world-class motorsports and entertainment events. The goal is for interns to leave not only with hands-on experience, but with a deeper understanding of venue management and the skills needed to pursue a career in the sports and entertainment industry.
