Job description

Job Summary

Aptive is seeking Biomedical Technicians / Equipment Support Specialists (BMETs) to support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) under the Biomedical Engineering Technical Professional Support Services (BETPSS) program. These positions provide lifecycle management, maintenance, and technical support for a wide range of medical equipment used in VA medical facilities.

The Biomedical Technician / Equipment Support Specialist performs installation, inspection, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and documentation of diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment. The role ensures medical equipment remains safe, functional, and compliant with VA biomedical engineering standards, manufacturer specifications, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Personnel work closely with VA Biomedical Engineering staff, clinical personnel, manufacturers, and IT personnel to ensure the availability and reliability of equipment that supports patient care.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Core Responsibilities (All Levels)

    • Perform preventive maintenance, safety inspections, functional testing, and repairs on biomedical equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and VA policies.
    • Install, configure, and test medical equipment and systems in clinical environments.
    • Troubleshoot equipment failures using test equipment, technical manuals, and diagnostic software.
    • Maintain accurate documentation of maintenance activities in VA-approved computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
    • Support medical equipment inventory management, asset tracking, and lifecycle sustainment.
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory and safety requirements including electrical safety, infection control, and cybersecurity guidelines where applicable.
    • Assist with equipment recalls, hazard alerts, and corrective actions.
    • Coordinate with clinical staff to minimize equipment downtime and ensure continuity of patient care.
    • Assist with incoming equipment inspections, acceptance testing, and system integration where required.
    • Provide basic user support and operational guidance to clinical personnel.

     

    Position Levels

    Level 0 - Entry Level Biomedical Technician

    • Supports routine preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting of biomedical equipment under supervision.
    • Assists senior technicians with equipment installations, repairs, and inspections.
    • Performs inventory updates, documentation, and administrative maintenance support.
    • Typically requires technical training or entry-level experience in biomedical equipment technology or electronics.

    Level I - Biomedical Technician

    • Performs routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of general biomedical equipment with minimal supervision.
    • Conducts equipment inspections, calibrations, and functional verification testing.
    • Assists with equipment installations and system upgrades.
    • Typically requires 1-3 years of biomedical equipment maintenance experience or equivalent training.

    Level II - Biomedical Technician

    • Independently performs maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of complex biomedical equipment.
    • Supports system integration, configuration, and acceptance testing for new equipment.
    • Provides technical guidance to junior technicians.
    • Assists in identifying recurring equipment issues and implementing corrective solutions.
    • Typically requires 3-5 years of biomedical equipment maintenance experience.

    Level III - Senior Biomedical Technician

    • Serves as a senior technical expert responsible for complex diagnostics, repairs, and system-level troubleshooting.
    • Leads equipment installations, upgrades, and major repair activities.
    • Provides mentorship and technical oversight to lower-level technicians.
    • Assists VA biomedical engineering leadership with planning, lifecycle management, and equipment evaluations.
    • Typically requires 5+ years of biomedical equipment maintenance experience and demonstrated expertise across multiple equipment modalities.

     

Minimum Qualifications

Education Requirement:

  • Associates or higher degree in the biomedical technology or biomedical engineering field; OR
  • Associates or higher degree in electronics, a field of information technology, or engineering (other than biomedical engineering) AND 1 year of creditable experience; OR
  • Completion of the Department of Defense (DOD) biomedical equipment technician training program; OR
  • Completion of a DOD training program in repair and maintenance of electronic systems or information technology AND 1 year of creditable experience; OR
  • Completion of a biomedical engineering technician or Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) certificate program that included an internship or apprenticeship; OR
  • Completion of biomedical engineering technician or HTM certificate program that did not include an internship AND 1 year of creditable experience; OR
  • Hold or having ever held certification as a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET), Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist (CRES), Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES), or Certified Healthcare Technology Manager (CHTM). Continuous maintenance of certification is not required throughout contract.
  • Demonstrated competency to perform operational verification procedures, planned maintenance, and repair service on various medical equipment.
  • Understanding of regulatory agencies' requirements, industry regulatory requirements and International Standard Organization standards.
  • Familiarity with the setup and application of test equipment.
  • Familiarity of networking principles and language (e.g., Access Control List (ACL), Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and Virtual Local Area Networks (VLAN))
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical literature, schematics, and drawings.
  • Level 0 Experience - None, only education requirement.
  • Level I Experience - A minimum of one year of hospital or healthcare experience performing medical equipment maintenance.
  • Level II Experience - A minimum of three years of hospital or healthcare experience performing medical equipment maintenance.
  • Level III Experience - A minimum of five years of hospital or healthcare experience performing medical equipment maintenance.
