Biomed. Engineer

Salary: $90,000โ€“$115,000. Must live in the DMV area onsite only. Location: Walter Reed โ€“ Bethesda, MD.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering.
  • Five (5) yearsโ€™ experience in working with, repairing, and troubleshooting biomedical equipment.
  • Three (3) or more yearsโ€™ experience in working with, repairing, and troubleshooting medical simulators (robotic patients and virtual reality simulators).
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • U.S. Citizen.
  • Minimum three (3) yearsโ€™ experience with at least one of the following systems: Laerdal Medical, VirtaMED, CAE Healthcare, Mimic Technologies, Simbionix.
Job Responsibilities
  • Responsible for applying advanced engineering practices and medical knowledge to complex multidisciplinary patient care through digital design, computer manufacturing techniques, CPU control boards, and wiring; develop overall goals, objectives, priorities, and deadlines for training programs.
  • Maintain competency by reviewing literature, attending conferences, meetings, professional courses, and through contact with similar facilities; present technical papers at national and professional groups.
  • Under guidance of the Medical Director, conduct overseas simulation diagnostic troubleshooting and repair for nonโ€‘functioning training units and assist with execution of medical simulation training at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
  • Work under general supervision of the department that sets overall objectives.
  • Develop deadlines, projects, and tasks; assign priorities when multiple projects are involved.
  • Plan and carry out projects, evaluate technical repair procedures, and improve efficiency and productivity of the Simulation Center; assist the Medical Director and other personnel in maintaining medical equipment used throughout the center, WRNMMC, and DHA partners.
  • Ensure reduced learner and patient risk, thereby reducing cost of procedures and training; coordinate with physicians, nurses, interns, residents, and various military and logistic personnel; engage vendors for equipment estimates and quotations.
  • Obtain or exchange factual information, provide technical recommendations, and plan, coordinate, or advise on work efforts; influence managers to accept and implement findings.
  • Formulate monthly reports on production, inventory, quality improvement initiatives, and training to the Medical Director.
  • Plan and carry out assignments in accordance with accepted policies, resolve conflicts, and keep service chiefs informed of progress and potential impact issues.
  • Assist with resolving technical issues with simulation training equipment ranging from computerized task trainers to robotic patient mannequins and advanced virtual reality medical simulators.
  • Ensure personnel adhere to SOPs regarding proper use of simulators and supporting equipment.
  • Write and update SOPs.
  • Track and report troubleshooting, repair logs, and overall simulator functionality to the Medical Director and ensure all necessary actions are considered.
  • Research simulation technology and provide findings to the Medical Director.
  • Provide advice and assistance to services on the application and utilization of all types of training simulators.
  • Provide monthly reports to the Simulation Programs Manager on budget issues concerning repair of simulation and biomedical equipment.
  • Assist in initiating and maintaining documentation for budget requests.
  • Collect data and justify purchases of new simulation technology.
  • Monitor and document simulation use by obtaining training information.
  • Maintain a file of past and cumulative usage.
  • Utilize databases for acquiring, maintaining, and tracking simulation equipment and supplies; manage turnโ€‘in of equipment and supplies.
  • Adhere to handโ€‘receipt policies at the appropriate Military Training Facility; communicate with the Simulation Programs Manager and Logistics to understand purchasing and funding requirements.
  • Assist and arrange calibration and repair for simulators/equipment; schedule maintenance of all instrumentation associated with each simulator.
  • Coordinate with supporting activities such as Automation Management Organization, Facilities Management Department, Biomed, Logistics, and Audio/Visual on problem solving for simulators and equipment.
  • Be available to departmental representatives for participation in research protocols related to best practices of training equipment.
  • Participate in research and viability of new simulation technology.
  • Attend national conferences and arrange demonstrations of new simulation technology; maintain professional contact with all MTF personnel, vendors, and visitors.
  • Promote the MTF Simulation Center by providing tours to internal and external persons interested in usage of training equipment.
  • Understand Navy and Army MTF policies and procedures to assist with coordinating simulation training and purchasing supplies requests.
  • Apply knowledge of medical terminology, simulation technology, and ability to learn simulation software to evaluate and recommend training solutions.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing; produce justifications for purchases and personnel; communicate with the Simulation Program Manager.
  • Multiโ€‘task and work in an environment with constant interruptions and reorganization.
  • Track shipping/receiving processes and manage return of equipment to vendors for repair or maintenance.
  • Have practical knowledge of audioโ€‘visual to support the Simulation Centerโ€™s AV requirements such as Digital Light Projects and video cameras.
  • Be computer literate and capable of learning new simulation software.
  • Apply advanced engineering theories, principles, and standards to extend or modify practices and solve novel problems.
