What is a temporary Coast Guard paramedic?

Temporary Coast Guard Paramedics are certified medical professionals who are employed on a short-term basis to provide emergency medical care within the U.S. Coast Guard. Their primary duties include responding to medical emergencies, providing first aid, and supporting search and rescue missions. These paramedics are often hired to fill staffing gaps or to support specific missions or operations where additional medical personnel are needed. They work in challenging environments, sometimes at sea or in remote locations, ensuring the health and safety of Coast Guard personnel.

What are some unique challenges faced by temporary Coast Guard paramedics compared to civilian paramedic roles?

Temporary Coast Guard Paramedics often encounter challenging environments, such as working on ships or remote coastal areas, where medical resources can be limited and rapid evacuation may not always be possible. They must be prepared to provide high-quality emergency care in dynamic and sometimes unpredictable settings, frequently collaborating with Coast Guard personnel and adapting to a military-style chain of command. Flexibility, adaptability, and strong teamwork skills are essential, as is the ability to stay calm under pressure during maritime emergencies or search-and-rescue missions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary Coast Guard paramedic, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Coast Guard Paramedic, you need advanced medical training, current paramedic certification (such as NREMT-P), and knowledge of emergency response protocols. Familiarity with specialized equipment like defibrillators, airway management tools, and electronic patient care reporting systems is typically required. Outstanding stress management, teamwork, and rapid decision-making skills help you remain effective in high-pressure maritime environments. These competencies are essential for providing lifesaving care during emergencies and ensuring the safety of Coast Guard personnel and civilians at sea.

What is the difference between Temporary Coast Guard Paramedic vs Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)?

AspectTemporary Coast Guard ParamedicEmergency Medical Technician (EMT)
CredentialsParamedic certification, Coast Guard trainingEMT certification, state-specific training
Work EnvironmentMaritime, Coast Guard vessels, rescue missionsAmbulances, emergency scenes, hospitals
Employer & IndustryU.S. Coast Guard, maritime rescueEMS agencies, hospitals, ambulance services

Temporary Coast Guard Paramedics and EMTs both provide emergency medical care, but the former works primarily in maritime environments with specialized Coast Guard training, while EMTs operate mainly on land in ambulances and emergency scenes. The Coast Guard Paramedic role involves additional certifications and maritime rescue protocols, making it distinct in scope and setting from the EMT profession.

Job description

PARAMEDIC

Joint Base Cape Cod, Buzzards Bay, MA  |  Full-Time  |  24/7/365 Rotating Coverage

Position Overview

We are seeking a certified Paramedic to provide uninterrupted emergency medical coverage at Joint Base Cape Cod (JBCC), a 22,000-acre secure U.S. Coast Guard installation in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. JBCC's size and limited public access mean municipal EMS response can exceed 20 minutes, making this a mission-critical, high-autonomy role for a Paramedic who can operate independently and reliably as the front line of emergency medical response for base personnel, housing residents, and other units on-site.

Key Responsibilities

●       Provide advanced life support (ALS) emergency medical response and sustain continuous operational readiness as part of 24/7/365 coverage at JBCC.

●       Respond to medical emergencies across a large, remote installation, including areas with limited signage, lighting, and access.

●       Operate and maintain the assigned government-furnished ambulance and associated medical equipment.

●       Document care using the Military Health System (MHS) GENESIS electronic health record system.

●       Report incidents involving accidents, injuries, or potential third-party liability in accordance with program timelines.

●       Support administrative and training events (e.g., briefings, informational sessions) as requested.

●       Maintain scope-of-practice compliance and coordinate with the on-site USCG Medical Treatment Facility as needed.

●       Maintain flexibility to support shift relief and continuity of coverage in coordination with the contractor's scheduling team.

Qualifications & Experience

●       Current State of Massachusetts Paramedic certification (required).

●       Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required).

●       Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (required).

●       Authorization to practice within the Cape and Islands EMS system (may be completed upon award/hire).

●       No adverse information on file with the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB).

●       U.S. citizenship or authorization to work full-time in the United States; ability to read, write, speak, and understand English fluently.

●       Ability to pass a background investigation and maintain a Government-issued installation access credential.

●       Prior experience in a military, secure-facility, or other high-autonomy EMS environment preferred.

Compensation

$34–$38/hour, depending on experience and certifications. This is a local, on-site position; no relocation per diem or travel allowance applies.

Application Process

Interested candidates should submit a current resume, proof of required certifications/licenses, and three (3) professional references for consideration.

We are an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates and are committed to providing an inclusive and accessible recruitment process. Accommodations are available upon request at any stage of the hiring process.
