What is an overnight Coast Guard paramedic?

Overnight Coast Guard Paramedics are specially trained emergency medical professionals who work nighttime shifts with the U.S. Coast Guard. Their primary duties involve responding to medical emergencies at sea, providing advanced life support, and ensuring the health and safety of Coast Guard personnel and civilians during overnight hours. They may be stationed on ships, at coastal facilities, or on rapid response teams, and must be prepared to handle a wide range of medical situations in challenging maritime environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight Coast Guard paramedic, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Overnight Coast Guard Paramedic, you need advanced emergency medical training, strong problem-solving abilities, and relevant paramedic certification, often combined with Coast Guard-specific qualifications. Proficiency in using emergency medical equipment, communication systems, and navigation tools is typically required. Excellent teamwork, resilience under pressure, and effective communication are vital soft skills for this demanding, high-stakes role. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure rapid, life-saving interventions and coordinated response during maritime emergencies, especially in challenging overnight conditions.

What are the main challenges faced by overnight Coast Guard paramedics, and how are they supported during their shifts?

Overnight Coast Guard Paramedics often encounter unique challenges such as responding to emergencies in remote or difficult-to-access locations, managing fatigue due to nighttime hours, and working in unpredictable maritime conditions. They are typically supported through rigorous training, access to specialized equipment, and close coordination with their team members, including other paramedics, rescue swimmers, and vessel crews. Regular briefings and debriefings, as well as robust communication protocols, help ensure safety and effective response throughout overnight operations.

Job description

PARAMEDIC

Joint Base Cape Cod, Buzzards Bay, MA  |  Full-Time  |  24/7/365 Rotating Coverage

Position Overview

We are seeking a certified Paramedic to provide uninterrupted emergency medical coverage at Joint Base Cape Cod (JBCC), a 22,000-acre secure U.S. Coast Guard installation in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. JBCC's size and limited public access mean municipal EMS response can exceed 20 minutes, making this a mission-critical, high-autonomy role for a Paramedic who can operate independently and reliably as the front line of emergency medical response for base personnel, housing residents, and other units on-site.

Key Responsibilities

●       Provide advanced life support (ALS) emergency medical response and sustain continuous operational readiness as part of 24/7/365 coverage at JBCC.

●       Respond to medical emergencies across a large, remote installation, including areas with limited signage, lighting, and access.

●       Operate and maintain the assigned government-furnished ambulance and associated medical equipment.

●       Document care using the Military Health System (MHS) GENESIS electronic health record system.

●       Report incidents involving accidents, injuries, or potential third-party liability in accordance with program timelines.

●       Support administrative and training events (e.g., briefings, informational sessions) as requested.

●       Maintain scope-of-practice compliance and coordinate with the on-site USCG Medical Treatment Facility as needed.

●       Maintain flexibility to support shift relief and continuity of coverage in coordination with the contractor's scheduling team.

Qualifications & Experience

●       Current State of Massachusetts Paramedic certification (required).

●       Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required).

●       Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (required).

●       Authorization to practice within the Cape and Islands EMS system (may be completed upon award/hire).

●       No adverse information on file with the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB).

●       U.S. citizenship or authorization to work full-time in the United States; ability to read, write, speak, and understand English fluently.

●       Ability to pass a background investigation and maintain a Government-issued installation access credential.

●       Prior experience in a military, secure-facility, or other high-autonomy EMS environment preferred.

Compensation

$34–$38/hour, depending on experience and certifications. This is a local, on-site position; no relocation per diem or travel allowance applies.

Application Process

Interested candidates should submit a current resume, proof of required certifications/licenses, and three (3) professional references for consideration.

We are an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates and are committed to providing an inclusive and accessible recruitment process. Accommodations are available upon request at any stage of the hiring process.
