Job Description:

ABOUT POMONA COLLEGE: Located near Los Angeles, California, Pomona College is widely regarded as one of the nation's premier liberal arts colleges. Established in 1887, Pomona College is known for small classes, a challenging curriculum, close relationships between students and faculty, and a range of student research and leadership opportunities. Pomona is a member of The Claremont Colleges.

JOB PURPOSE: The Assistant Coach for Men's Soccer assists the Head Coach in all aspects of running the Men's Soccer program. Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, scouting, recruiting, organizing practice, game preparation, and scheduling. The Assistant Coach is required to abide by the rules and regulations established by Pomona College, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), and the NCAA Division III.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reporting directly to the Head Baseball Coach and Athletic Director, the Assistant Coach position will provide opportunities and responsibilities in the areas of athletic performance that include, but are not limited to:

Team and Player Performance:

  • Assist with pre-season, in-season, and post-season training and planning.

  • Developing game-day strategies and tactical planning

  • Scouting opponents and creating scouting reports for competition

  • Video breakdown, for team and player analysis

  • Supporting player communication and feedback

Recruiting:

  • Assist in the year-long recruiting efforts (via in-person, electronically, and phone conversations)

  • Organize and facilitate prospective student-athlete visits

  • Help with camp and clinic operations

Program Operations:

  • Assist with managing travel logistics for the collegiate season

  • Oversee soccer equipment

  • Assist with NCAA and SCIAC compliance

  • Assist with alumni and parent relations

  • Assist Head Coach and Assistant Coaches with other related work as needed

ADDITIONAL DEPARTMENT DUTIES AND OPPORTUNITIES:

Winter and Spring Season Only:

  • Serve as home contest manager.

  • Work alongside the Assistant AD for Operations and Events.

  • Opportunities to work alongside athletics communications.

  • Assist with club sports.

  • Year-long Opportunities: Assist with the oversight of the Athletic Performance Center, assist with the Center for Athletics, Recreation, and Wellness, and serve on department committees.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience required.

  • Licenses/Certificates: A valid driver's license is required or an equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events.

  • Experience: A minimum of 2 years of experience as a coach at the collegiate or professional level of athletics. Collegiate playing and/or coaching experience preferred. Experience in the recruitment of academically focused scholar-athletes is preferred. Capacity to positively interact with and support a culturally, ethnically, economically, and socially diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS:

  • Strong administrative, interpersonal skills, and computer/technology skills.

  • Appropriate certifications in First Aid, CPR, AED, or willingness to complete certifications upon hire if working independently with student-athletes.

  • Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and associated professional software (such as Internet research and menu-driven databases). Demonstrate understanding of the use of equipment in assessing and improving department systems and processes to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.

  • Demonstrate effective, accurate, and clear communication with excellent/strong verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, phone, and customer service skills. Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of duties.

  • Use strong organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and keen attention to detail.

REQUIRED HOURS AND ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS: This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefit-eligible position. The hourly rate for this role is $16.90 per hour, 15-20 hours per week, depending on the competitive season. The specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include, but not be limited to, education, training, relevant prior experience, and performance in prior role. All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship. As a California employer, Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.
