JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
This job level contains the following positions: Activity/Sports Instructor I, Athletic Coordinator, Camp Supervisor, Climbing Wall Instructor, Front Desk II, Gym Supervisor, Lifeguard II, Lifeguard II Days, Park Coordinator, Pool Maintenance, Swim Instructor, and Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor. Please see the Illustrative Examples of Work section below for more information.
Activity/Sports Instructor I- Plans and administers children and youth activities in a variety of different sports or instructional programming. Previous coaching/instructing experience required. Must obtain CPR/AED and First Aid certification within 30 days of employment.
Athletic Coordinator- Responsible for facility, equipment, and working with coaches and sports officials. Possesses advanced knowledge of activities (i.e. archery, basketball, volleyball, baseball, pickleball, softball). Must be at least 18 years old.
Camp Supervisor- Supervises Camp Counselors; assists Camp Director with daily operations of summer camp programming; assists in planning, organization, and implementation of various youth activities; maintains accurate records and reports, as necessary; ensures safety rules, departmental policies, and regulations are followed by staff and participants. Must be at least 18 years old. Must obtain CPR/AED and First Aid certification within 30 days of employment.
Climbing Wall Instructor- Instructs classes at the Recreation Center Climbing Wall; qualifies and records all participants; administers belay, safety, and gear checks; works during rentals and special wall events. Climbing experience required.
Front Desk II- Minimum three years front desk experienceat the Recreation Center. Answers phone calls, processes registrations and admissions; provides information about memberships, classes, and activities. Basic office and computer skills required. Must have successfully completed Front Desk 1, Step 3.
Lifeguard II - At assigned pools, assists the public; enforces pool rules; responds to emergencies; performs activity set ups and clean ups; performs other duties as assigned by Aquatic Supervisor. Minimum one year experience guarding and in good standing.
Lifeguard II Days- At assigned pools, assists the public; enforces pool rules; responds to emergencies; performs activity set ups and clean ups. Available during day shift between 5:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., September through May. Must be at least 18 years old.
Park Coordinator-Oversees and schedules Attendants and Supervisors; responsible for equipment and supplies, cleaning park, and providing assistance to park users. Must be at least 18 years old.
Pool Maintenance- Responsible for cleanliness, mechanical functions, proper pool chemical ratios, filtration systems, vacuuming, general cleanliness, opening aquatic facility, supervision of morning programs, and general daily maintenance. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. CPR/AED and First Aid certifications and current American Red Cross Lifeguard training or nationally recognized certification preferred.
Swim Instructor- Teaches swim lessons independently; prepares lesson plans; attends required training classes. CPR/AED and First Aid certification preferred.
Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor- Responsible for leading and supervising activities for persons with special needs; supervises Therapeutic Recreation Counselors; assists Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator in planning, organization, and implementation of events and activities, as assigned; maintains accurate records and reports, as necessary; ensures safety rules, departmental policies, and regulations are followed by staff and participants. May be used as a resource to help train other staff members, as necessary. Must be at least 18 years old.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND APPLICATION PROCESS
  1. Be at least 16 years old (or as specified); and
  2. Be able to work weekdays, weekends, and holidays; and
  3. Have the ability to lift a minimum of 35 pounds; and
  4. Have the ability to demonstrate techniques and skills associated with the position; and
  5. Aquatic Staff: must possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguard training or nationally recognized certification, CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification, First Aid certification, and be able to pass a swim test.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to:

  • Perform other related duties, as assigned

NOTE: Advancement to step 1.5 will happen at six months of employment. Advancement to the next step will be considered after one year of employment, if a minimum of 125 hours have been worked and a satisfactory employee evaluation has been obtained.
Temporary employees are not eligible for fringe benefits.
