Job description

Northwestern University - Assistant Professor of Modern Japanese History

The Department of History at Northwestern University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in the history of modern Japan. We particularly encourage applications from historians who consider connections across and within the Japanese empire, the process of decolonization and its aftermath, and the global or regional contexts of Japanese history. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in History or an adjacent field by the start date of the appointment. The successful candidate will teach four courses annually over the course of three academic quarters, advise graduate students, and contribute to a vibrant interdisciplinary community of Asianists both in and beyond the History Department. This is a full-time position starting September 1, 2027.

Salary
The expected base pay range for this position is $90,000 - $105,000.

This base pay range is for a nine-month academic appointment, does not include summer salary, and is subject to negotiation.

Northwestern University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including years since terminal degree, training, and field or discipline; departmental budget availability; internal comparators; and external market pay for comparable jobs.
