Position Overview :

  • We are seeking an experienced Telecom Engineer to design, implement, and maintain communications infrastructure that supports electric utility operations, including transmission, distribution, and substation networks. This role requires expertise in legacy Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) systems and modern IP/MPLS networks, with the ability to integrate and maintain mission-critical telecom platforms.
  • Experience with enterprise networking technologies is a strong plus.
    The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience supporting OT/utility telecom networks, SCADA communications, and high-availability network services. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, configure, and maintain telecom and networking systems for electric utility operations, including TDM, SONET/SDH, and MPLS-based platforms.
  • Plan and execute migration strategies from legacy telecom to modern IP/MPLS environments.
  • Support telecom infrastructure across substations, control centers, and field devices to ensure high availability and low latency for SCADA and critical operational systems.
  • Perform telecom network assessments, capacity planning, and system upgrades.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve telecom and network incidents; provide on-call support as needed.
  • Collaborate with operations, cybersecurity, and engineering teams to ensure system resilience and compliance with NERC CIP and utility standards.
  • Document network architecture, configurations, and change management records.
  • Assist in integrating enterprise networking concepts (routing, switching, firewalls, VPN) into the OT telecom environment.
  • Evaluate and recommend telecom/network hardware, software, and vendor solutions.
  • Participate in telecom system lifecycle management, including obsolescence planning, patching, and upgrades. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in telecom engineering for utilities, critical infrastructure, or industrial control environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of legacy telecom systems (TDM, SONET/SDH, PDH, microwave radio).
  • Strong working knowledge of modern IP/MPLS transport networks, routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, MPLS TE, RSVP-TE, LDP), and QoS.
  • Familiarity with enterprise networking technologies: Cisco/Juniper routing & switching, firewalls, network segmentation, and VPN.
  • Experience supporting SCADA, AMI, or DER communications is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with NERC CIP compliance and cybersecurity standards for telecom and network systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to perform root-cause analysis.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills. 

Preferred Certifications (Nice-to-Have):

  • Cisco CCNP/CCIE, Juniper JNCIP/JNCIE, or Nokia SRA.
  • MEF Carrier Ethernet Certifications.
  • RCDD (Registered Communications Distribution Designer).
