National Grid is hiring a Senior Engineer (Electrical Planning and Design), Electrical Engineering for Northboro, Massachusetts.
Job Purpose
This position reports directly to the Telecommunications Engineering Manager and will be responsible for the engineering, design & implementation of cost effective & reliable telecommunications solutions in conformance with National Grid's telecom policies, processes, procedures, standards, and guidelines as well as telecom network architecture & strategy. National Grid relies heavily on these telecom networks & systems to support the construction, operation, maintenance, and restoration of its electric delivery networks. As National Grid is migrating our legacy telecom networks and systems to IP-based platform, we are seeking candidates with telecom engineering background and knowledge and extensive work experience in IP-based networking technologies.
Key Accountabilities
  • Analyze telecom requirements, evaluate telecom options, recommend telecom solution, and implement approved telecom solution for internal & external customers. Telecom options may include, but not limited to, private fiber optic networks/systems, private radio, private microwave, power line carrier, or commercial wired & wireless communications services.
  • Provide planning, engineering, design, and implementation services for fiber optic, radio, and microwave networks & systems to meet the needs of internal and external customers.
  • Provide telecom engineering support for Electric Transmission, Substation, Distribution, and Smart Grid Capital Projects.
  • Manage (where a Project Manager is deemed not needed) & implement small/independent telecom projects as assigned by the Telecommunications Engineering Manager.
  • Create telecom policies, processes, procedures, standards, guidelines, and strategy as assigned by the Telecom Engineering Manager.
  • Make design decisions, ensuring alignment with grid reliability, cybersecurity, and regulatory requirements.
  • Implement MPLS-TP-based transport networks to support secure, segmented, and deterministic utility communications.
    Troubleshoot complex Layer 2 architectures (VLANs, STP variants, QinQ) across multiple networks.
    Implement, and support Layer 3 routing architectures across enterprise WAN and LAN environments.
    Optimize network performance, capacity, and resiliency using Network Management Systems (NMS) and performance analytics.
    Ensure high availability, redundancy, and deterministic latency for critical protection and teleprotection schemes (e.g., line differential relaying).
    Provide technical telecom support to various internal engineering groups, Protection & Telecom Operations Organization, Shared Services (IS, Corporate Security, Gas business unit, etc.)
  • Provide subject matter expertise to project and operational teams as well as internal & external committees.
  • Keep abreast of technology innovations and seek appropriate opportunities to apply them.

Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent from an ABET accredited engineering program.
  • Good working knowledge of telecom industry standards, safety standards, and federal, state, and local roles & regulations as applied to telecommunications Industry.
  • A minimum of 5 years of engineering experience in at least one of the following areas: IP-Based Networking, Fiber Optic Networks & Systems, Microwave Networks & systems, Land Mobile Radio (LMR) engineering, and commercial wired & wireless communications services.
  • Intermediate or advanced knowledge of:
    • Layer 2 switching (broadcast domains, VLAN design, trunking, Spanning Tree variants)
    • Layer 3 routing (IP design, subnetting, routing protocols)
    Relevant advanced networking certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, or equivalent).
    Proficient in MS Office computer skills (Outlook, Excel, Work, Power point, Access, etc.)
  • Strong problem solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong verbal & written communications skills.
  • High attention to detail in documentation and change management.
    Professional Engineers License is a plus.
