What are Technical Team Leads?

Technical Team Leads are professionals who oversee and guide a team of engineers or technical staff within a company. They are responsible for managing projects, providing technical direction, mentoring team members, and ensuring that work is completed efficiently and to required standards. In addition to their leadership responsibilities, Technical Team Leads often contribute to hands-on technical work and help bridge the gap between management and technical teams. Their role is critical in ensuring both the success of projects and the professional growth of their team members.

How does a Technical Team Lead balance hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities?

Technical Team Leads often face the challenge of balancing their own technical contributions with managing and supporting their team. Typically, this involves allocating dedicated time for code reviews, mentoring, and project planning, while still reserving time for their own development tasks. Effective leads prioritize clear communication, delegate tasks appropriately, and stay adaptable to shifting team needs. Successful Technical Team Leads also foster collaboration, ensuring that both project goals and team members' growth are supported.

Job description

Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin. BETTER TOGETHER
This position is hybrid with regular requirements to work onsite. Candidates must be willing to commute to Madison, WI as needed.
We're looking for a resourceful, passionate Data Center Team Lead to manage, maintain, and monitor our enterprise data center systems. You'll work alongside systems administrators, security analysts, network engineers, and a mix of business owners and outside partners - keeping our data center environment running smoothly and securely.
You'll be responsible for proactively monitoring the health and performance of our Data Center environment while providing high-level technical support and well-thought-out solutions for enterprise systems.
You should have a keen eye for detail, strong problem-solving instincts, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. We also value curiosity: you should be willing to research technologies outside your current skillset and comfort zone. Knowing the answer is great - knowing how to find the answer is better.
Responsibilities

  • Administer enterprise server environments, including Windows Server and/or Linux platforms, virtualization, and application hosting
  • Lead technical initiatives and projects - planning tasks, coordinating the team, and keeping management informed along the way
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to gather requirements, design solutions, and deliver data center projects
  • Regularly assess and recommend improvements to performance, scalability, and security
  • Help develop and document infrastructure standards, procedures, and operational policies
  • Stay current on industry trends and bring forward ideas that improve efficiency and security

Requirements
  • Proven experience leading a team of Systems Administrators or in a similar role
  • Relevant technical certifications (Microsoft, virtualization, cloud, or security-related) preferred, with the ability to earn additional certifications as needed
  • Experience researching and evaluating emerging technologies to inform architecture and purchasing decisions
  • Strong communication skills and a track record of working effectively across teams
  • Hands-on experience with monitoring, performance analysis, and troubleshooting tools
Preferred
  • Experience supporting enterprise applications in a hosted or data center environment; healthcare application experience (e.g., Epic) is a plus
  • ITIL Foundation or equivalent service management experience
  • Familiarity with open source frameworks and solutions
  • An ability to foster a lighthearted and collaborative work environment

What We Offer
  • A healthy work-life balance at a mission-driven, non-profit organization focused on members and community
  • Training and technical development that's actively encouraged and supported
  • Access to cutting-edge tools and a collaborative, supportive team environment

Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. GHC-SCW considers candidates regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability or veteran status.
