What is technical staff?

Technical staff are professionals who provide specialized support and expertise in areas such as engineering, information technology, research, or operations within an organization. Their responsibilities often include installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting technical systems or equipment, as well as supporting projects with their technical knowledge. They may work in various industries, including IT, healthcare, education, and manufacturing. Technical staff play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of technical processes and supporting the organization's overall goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as technical staff?

To thrive as Technical Staff, you need a solid background in your area of expertise (such as IT, engineering, or laboratory work) and typically a relevant degree or technical certification. Familiarity with industry-specific tools, software platforms, and systems (like programming languages, lab equipment, or network infrastructure) is often required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you effectively collaborate and address challenges. These competencies are essential for ensuring efficient operations, high-quality results, and successful project delivery.

How does a technical staff member typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Technical Staff members frequently work cross-functionally, collaborating with teams such as engineering, product management, and customer support. They may participate in project meetings, provide technical expertise, and help troubleshoot issues that arise during product development or deployment. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as Technical Staff often serve as a bridge between technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring projects move forward smoothly. This collaborative environment can also offer valuable learning opportunities and exposure to different areas of the organization.

What are considered technical staff positions?

Technical staff positions include roles such as software developers, network administrators, system analysts, and IT support specialists. These roles typically require technical skills, knowledge of relevant tools or programming languages, and often involve working with hardware, software, or network systems in various industries.

Job description

The Advanced Electro-Optical Systems Groupย (Group 99) specializes in the rapid design and prototyping of innovative electro-optic systems that support the Department of Defense, NASA, and other U.S. government organizations. The group has deep expertise in satellite systems, electro-optical and infrared sensors, electronics, image processing, and low-SWaP (size, weight, and power) optical communications. By combining hardware and software development under one roof, the group rapidly architects, prototypes, and deploys end-to-end systems tailored to mission needs. We work closely with end users to transform enabling concepts into operational capabilities on accelerated timelines.

We are seeking self-motivated engineers and scientists with multidisciplinary skill sets and a passion for prototyping cutting-edge systems that address critical national challenges.

Job Description

The Group seeks an Engineer to join our prototyping team, focused on building and integrating advanced electro-optic camera systems. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with optical, mechanical, and electrical engineers to design, prototype, integrate, and deploy highly integrated electro-optic systems for terrestrial and space applications.

This role emphasizes hands-on execution and system-level ownership, including electronics design, hardware bring-up, debugging, and integration with sensors, optics, and mechanical assemblies. The ideal candidate is self-directed, comfortable working in ambiguous problem spaces, and able to identify, scope, and solve problems across disciplinary boundaries. Engineers in this role are expected to think beyond individual boards or subsystems and contribute to overall system performance, reliability, and mission success.

The Group is vertically integrated and develops systems from concept through prototyping and deployment. Given the collaborative and hardware-focused nature of the work, the successful applicant is expected to work fully on site.

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field. In lieu of a PhD, a Master's with 5 years of experience or Bachelor's with 10 years of experience will be considered.ย
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • This is an on-site, collaborative role.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and independently
  • Demonstrated ability to solve broad technical problems and complex engineering challenges
