What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical recruiting intern?

To thrive as a Technical Recruiting Intern, you need foundational knowledge of recruitment processes, an understanding of technical roles, and strong organizational skills, often supported by coursework in human resources or related fields. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), LinkedIn Recruiter, and resume databases is typically required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to build rapport help you stand out in sourcing and engaging candidates. These skills and qualities are crucial for effectively matching talent to technical positions and supporting the organization's hiring goals.

What are some common challenges technical recruiting interns face when sourcing candidates and how can they overcome them?

Technical Recruiting Interns often face challenges such as finding qualified candidates for niche technical roles and engaging passive talent who are not actively seeking new positions. To overcome these hurdles, interns can leverage a variety of sourcing platforms, refine their Boolean search techniques, and develop personalized outreach messages that highlight the unique aspects of the company and role. Building relationships with hiring managers to better understand technical requirements and participating in team meetings can also improve sourcing effectiveness and candidate fit.

What does a technical recruiting intern do?

A Technical Recruiting Intern supports the recruitment team by sourcing, screening, and communicating with candidates for technical positions such as software engineers or IT specialists. They assist in posting job openings, reviewing resumes, scheduling interviews, and sometimes conducting initial phone screens. The intern also helps maintain applicant tracking systems and may participate in employer branding initiatives or career fairs. This role provides hands-on experience in talent acquisition within the tech industry, offering exposure to both recruitment processes and the technical skillsets sought by companies.

AI Technical Recruiter

Output Biosciences

New York, NY โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision

Job description

The Role
Output has built a biological reasoning model that understands biology at the scale and complexity life actually operates. Our model independently learned the principles of molecular interactions, opening up drug treatments that were previously impossible. We're already generating therapies that traditional approaches cannot reach. The hardest problems in both AI and biology are being solved here, and there is room for you to own one.

Output is currently in stealth, operated by a team of repeat founders and biotech veterans with multiple exits in AI x Bio, and backed by top-tier VCs including Y Combinator.

You will build Output's team. This is a full-cycle recruiting role covering every hire from AI research scientists to computational biologists to drug discovery leads. You need to understand both the AI/ML research community and the biotech talent landscape well enough to source, screen, and close candidates who work at the intersection of the two.

  • You will own end-to-end recruiting across all roles: sourcing, outreach, screening, managing interview loops, and closing

  • You will build and maintain a candidate pipeline through proactive sourcing, networking, and long-term relationship building with researchers and scientists in AI, biology, and drug discovery

  • You will conduct first-round screening interviews, evaluating candidates with enough technical fluency to distinguish real depth from surface familiarity in AI/ML and computational biology

  • You will design and continuously improve screening frameworks and interview processes, ensuring Output identifies exceptional talent efficiently and consistently

  • You will represent Output at key venues including AI conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR) and biotech events, building relationships with researchers, PhD students, and postdocs

  • You will partner with the founders and hiring managers to define roles, set hiring strategy, and ensure every candidate experiences a rigorous and human process

  • You will own and maintain the ATS, keeping pipeline data clean and using it to track progress, identify bottlenecks, and improve workflows

  • You will manage the process through to offer: structuring competitive compensation packages, presenting offers to candidates, and handling negotiations on equity, salary, and terms

About You
  • You have 3+ years of full-cycle technical recruiting experience with a meaningful focus on AI/ML, research, or engineering roles

  • You have a track record of sourcing and closing niche technical talent in highly competitive markets

  • You have enough technical fluency in AI/ML to screen research candidates credibly: you understand the difference between someone who has trained models and someone who has used APIs, and you can assess publication records and research depth

  • You are comfortable building proactive sourcing strategies and cultivating long-term candidate relationships, not just filling open roles

  • You have familiarity with the AI/ML research community: key conferences, top labs, publication venues, and how researchers evaluate opportunities

  • You have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust with researchers and scientists who are skeptical of recruiting outreach

  • You have working knowledge of startup compensation structures, including equity, vesting, and how to position offers competitively against well-funded AI labs

  • You are comfortable working in a stealth environment where you cannot rely on brand recognition and must sell on substance

Bonus Points
  • You have experience recruiting in biotech, drug discovery, or computational biology in addition to AI/ML

  • You have experience as the first or early recruiter at a startup, building processes from scratch

  • You have experience with ATS platforms (Ashby, Greenhouse, or similar)

  • You have experience building university partnerships or intern/new-grad pipelines

  • You have a scientific or technical background that gives you deeper candidate assessment ability
