Technical Program Manager Cybersecurity information

What does a technical program manager in cybersecurity do?

A Technical Program Manager (TPM) in Cybersecurity oversees the planning, execution, and delivery of security-related projects and initiatives within an organization. They coordinate cross-functional teams, manage project timelines, and ensure that cybersecurity programs align with business objectives and compliance requirements. TPMs also communicate risks, track progress, and implement best practices to safeguard the organization's digital assets. Their role bridges technical expertise and project management to drive successful security outcomes.

How do technical program managers in cybersecurity typically coordinate cross-functional teams to drive security initiatives?

Technical Program Managers in Cybersecurity frequently act as the bridge between engineering, security operations, compliance, and executive leadership teams. They facilitate clear communication of project goals, timelines, and security requirements, often leading regular meetings and status updates. TPMs also ensure alignment across departments by translating technical security needs into actionable tasks for diverse stakeholders, managing dependencies, and proactively addressing roadblocks. This collaborative approach helps drive the successful implementation of cybersecurity programs and fosters a culture of shared responsibility for security.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical program manager in cybersecurity, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Program Manager in Cybersecurity, you need a strong background in cybersecurity principles, program management, and risk assessment, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in a related field and certifications like PMP or CISSP. Familiarity with security frameworks, project management tools (e.g., Jira, MS Project), and incident response systems is typically expected. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help drive cross-functional teams and manage complex security initiatives. These skills are crucial for effectively leading cybersecurity programs that protect organizations from evolving threats and ensure compliance.

What is the difference between Technical Program Manager Cybersecurity vs Security Analyst?

Employer & Industry UsageUsed in tech companies, financial institutions, government agenciesCommon in IT departments, cybersecurity firms, enterprise organizations

The Technical Program Manager Cybersecurity focuses on managing cybersecurity projects and programs, coordinating teams, and ensuring security initiatives align with organizational goals. In contrast, a Security Analyst primarily monitors security systems, investigates threats, and responds to incidents. While both roles require cybersecurity knowledge and certifications, the TPM Cybersecurity has a broader project management scope, whereas the Security Analyst is more operational and tactical.

Job description

Deliver AIR's Fleet Readiness: Own Heavy Maintenance Technical Execution at the Aircraft
The Heavy Maintenance Technical Execution Manager is a key member of the Fleet Aviation Sourcing & Technical (FAST) organization within TechOps, responsible for the technical execution of Heavy Maintenance programs across the Amazon AIR fleet. This role serves as the execution focal point for heavy maintenance delivery, working within a carrier-managed model across three fleet types (B767, B737, A330) and five carrier/MRO partners at domestic and international facilities. The Heavy Maintenance Technical Execution Manager owns technical execution at the point of work, from check induction and workscope validation through hangar-level execution oversight and return-to-service, delivered through program managers and on-site third-party (3P) representatives embedded in the hangar. Leveraging deep technical expertise, data-driven insights, and advanced analytics, this role independently reviews Airworthiness Directives (ADs), Service Bulletins (SBs), and engineering dispositions at the execution level to protect airworthiness, control cost, and improve fleet reliability. As a senior technical program manager, this role influences cross-functional teams across the entire MXP organization at VP-org scope and ensures heavy maintenance execution decisions align with operational, safety, regulatory, and business objectives. This role requires strong leadership, technical judgment, and the ability to operate independently in fast-paced, highly ambiguous environments where business problems, program approaches, and technology solutions remain undefined.
Key job responsibilities
• Own execution of the ~48 annual heavy maintenance C-checks, providing floor-level technical governance from induction through return-to-service.
• Oversee C-checks, structural inspections, aging aircraft programs, and modifications across all fleet types (B767, B737, A330).
• Independently review and disposition engineering findings, Airworthiness Directives (ADs), Service Bulletins (SBs), Engineering Orders/Authorizations (EO/EA), and MRO/OEM technical dispositions at the point of execution, assessing applicability, compliance method, and effect on RTS.
• Drive daily recoverability and recovery direction using Daily Status Reports (DSRs), making real-time span-time, cost, and airworthiness trade-offs before escalation.
• Oversee on-site 3P representatives and Program Managers to execute maintenance events on schedule and within cost.
• Validate workscope before work begins and evaluate non-routine findings, structural/corrosion and NDT results, damage assessments, and repair decisions at the point of work.
• Provide technical validation to support commercial and contractual decisions, protecting airworthiness and on-time delivery while controlling daily overrun exposure.
• Align heavy maintenance execution with long-term fleet maintenance strategies, partnering with the Technical Program Strategy leader and feeding execution data (DSRs, findings, overrun trends) back to inform program direction.
A day in the life
A Heavy Maintenance Technical Execution Manager's Day includes collaborating with carrier partners, MROs, engineering, fleet reliability, network planning, and finance teams to drive heavy maintenance execution and resolve complex technical issues at the point of work. Working alongside the Technical Program Strategy leader to align execution with long-term maintenance strategies, you'll review daily status reports (DSRs) and C-check findings, validate workscopes and disposition engineering findings, lead cross-functional recovery discussions, and direct on-site execution to protect return-to-service. The role balances hands-on technical problem-solving with real-time program execution, requiring frequent engagement with stakeholders and periodic travel to domestic and international MRO facilities. Travel is up to 20% annually (~40-50 days across 8-10 site visits) focused on execution oversight, on-site issue resolution, and quality audits.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 7+ years of working directly with engineering teams experience
- Experience managing programs across cross functional teams, building processes and coordinating release schedules
- Experience in aviation regulatory compliance
- 10+ years of experience in commercial aviation maintenance or engineering
- FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) License
- Experience supporting transport-category aircraft in a Part 121 environment
- Experience owning technical programs or initiatives end-to-end
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of project management disciplines including scope, schedule, budget, quality, along with risk and critical path management experience
- Experience managing projects across cross functional teams, building sustainable processes and coordinating release schedules
- Experience defining KPI's/SLA's used to drive multi-million dollar businesses and reporting to senior leadership
- Experience with Continuous Improvement and Six Sigma methodologies
- Experience with B737, B767, and/or A330 aircraft fleets
- Experience managing MRO and OEM relationships
