Department: Arts & Authors / Performing Arts

Reports To: Director of Arts & Authors/Director of Performing Arts/Drama Camps Status:

Full-Time (Exempt)

Position Summary

The Technical Director is responsible for the execution of all technical aspects of performances, events, and rentals within the Jewish Community Center's theater and event spaces. This includes advanced expertise in sound, lighting, and video projection. This position handles all A/V for performing arts programming, community events, educational programs, donor events, meetings, concerts, special events, educational programs, and summer drama camp, and external rentals while ensuring a safe, professional, and welcoming environment that reflects the mission and values of the JCC.

The Technical Director serves as the primary in-house technician and is the liaison between artists, renters, staff, vendors, and contracted technical personnel.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical theater expertise with exceptional organizational skills, collaborative leadership, and a commitment to community engagement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Technical Management

ยท Handles all advanced technical needs of theater performances, concerts, lectures, meetings, community events, external rentals, summer drama camps, preschool programming, and special events.

ยท Coordinates lighting, sound, video, staging, rigging, and backstage operations.

ยท Expertise running all equipment in projection booth, including sound board, lighting console, video projection, and QLab.

ยท Maintain inventory of all technical equipment and materials.

ยท Troubleshoot technical issues quickly and effectively.

ยท Develop and maintain production schedules and technical timeline as needed.

ยท Ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry best practices.

Theater Operations

ยท Manage day-to-day operations of the theater, projection booth, and associated production spaces.

ยท Develop and maintain theater HVAC calendar.

ยท Maintain theater equipment, technical systems, and production inventory.

ยท Recommend and oversee capital improvements and equipment upgrades.

ยท Establish operating procedures and production standards.

ยท Monitor facility conditions and coordinate repairs as necessary.

Rental and Event Services

ยท Manage all technical and production aspects of facility rentals.

ยท Meet with prospective renters to assess event requirements and determine technical needs.

ยท Prepare production estimates and rental-related technical costs.

ยท Coordinate setup, staffing, equipment usage, and event execution for rental clients.

ยท Serve as the primary production contact for outside organizations utilizing the theater and event spaces.

ยท Ensure rental events comply with facility policies, safety requirements, and contractual agreements.

ยท Work collaboratively with development, arts and culture, membership, and operations teams to support revenue-generating rental activities.

Budget and Financial Management

ยท Develop and manage annual technical budgets.

ยท Monitor A/V expenses and rental-related labor costs.

ยท Assist in establishing rental pricing and technical service fees.

ยท Evaluate equipment and staffing needs while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

ยท Support revenue generation through efficient management of rental operations.

Collaboration and Community Engagement

ยท Partner with Arts & Culture staff, educators, development professionals, and community leaders to support organizational programming.

ยท Foster positive relationships with artists, patrons, volunteers, renters, and community organizations.

ยท Support events that celebrate Jewish culture, traditions, and community engagement.

ยท Represent the JCC professionally with external partners and stakeholders.

Safety and Compliance

ยท Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, fire codes, and venue safety standards.

ยท Develop and maintain emergency response procedures for theater operations.

ยท Conduct regular safety inspections of equipment and facilities.

ยท Maintain appropriate documentation, certifications, and operational records.

Qualifications

Required

ยท Bachelor's degree in Technical Theater, Arts Administration, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.

ยท Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in technical theater production.

ยท Skilled in theatrical lighting, sound, video, staging, and production systems.

ยท Strong organizational, project management, and customer service skills.

ยท Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
