Technical Contract information

What is a technical contract?

A Technical Contract job is a temporary or project-based position where a professional with technical expertise is hired for a specific duration or task. These roles are common in industries like IT, engineering, and construction, where companies require specialized skills for short-term needs. Contractors typically work on a defined scope, often through an agency or as independent consultants. They may focus on software development, infrastructure projects, or technical support, depending on the assignment. Since these roles are contractual, they usually do not include benefits like permanent employees but often offer higher hourly or project-based pay.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a technical contract position?

To thrive as a Technical Contract professional, it's essential to have a strong background in contract management, technical writing, and knowledge of industry-specific standards or regulations, often supported by relevant education or certifications. Familiarity with contract management software, legal documentation systems, and project collaboration platforms is typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, strong negotiation skills, and effective communication are important soft skills for ensuring accuracy and building stakeholder trust. Mastery of these abilities ensures contracts are legally compliant, technically sound, and aligned with project or organizational goals.

What are some common challenges faced by technical contract professionals, and how can they be managed?

Technical Contract professionals often encounter challenges such as ensuring clarity in technical requirements, managing complex negotiations between multiple parties, and maintaining compliance with regulatory standards. Balancing technical accuracy with legal language can be demanding, but staying organized and leveraging contract management tools can help streamline the process. Collaborating closely with legal and technical teams is key to avoiding misunderstandings and ensuring all aspects of the contract are addressed. Being proactive in identifying potential risks and clarifying expectations early can also minimize issues throughout the contract lifecycle.

How do I get into technical contracting?

To enter technical contracting, develop relevant technical skills such as programming, networking, or cybersecurity, and gain experience through internships or entry-level positions. Certifications like CompTIA, Cisco, or Microsoft can improve your qualifications, and understanding contract negotiation and project management is also beneficial.

Job description

We are seeking a high-ownership, full-cycle Contract Technical Recruiter to help scale Overland AI during a critical phase of growth. This role will be responsible for driving hiring across our technical teams, partnering closely with our internal recruiter, hiring managers and leadership to identify and close exceptional talent. The ideal candidate thrives in fast-paced, ambiguous environments and brings a strong ability to source, assess, and close candidates for highly technical roles. You will play a key role in shaping how we build the team—balancing speed, quality, and candidate experience. This position can be remote, or based in Seattle, WA.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Own full-cycle recruiting across technical roles, including sourcing, screening, interview coordination, and closing candidates.
  • Partner closely with hiring managers to define role requirements, calibrate candidates, and drive effective hiring strategies.
  • Build and maintain strong pipelines of qualified candidates through outbound sourcing, referrals, and creative engagement strategies.
  • Develop a deep understanding of Overland’s mission, technology, and culture, and effectively communicate this to candidates.
  • Drive a high-quality candidate experience through clear communication, speed, and thoughtful engagement throughout the hiring process.
  • Track and analyze recruiting metrics to identify areas for improvement and increase efficiency across pipelines.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to hiring managers, providing guidance on market trends, candidate profiles, and hiring decisions.
  • Contribute to the development of scalable recruiting processes, tools, and best practices as the company grows.
Minimum Requirements:
  • 4+ years of full-cycle recruiting experience, preferably in a high-growth startup or technical environment.
  • Experience recruiting for software engineering roles (e.g., robotics, autonomy, infrastructure).
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence hiring decisions and build trust with technical leaders.
  • Experience managing multiple open roles simultaneously with strong organization and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with ATS platforms (e.g., Rippling) and sourcing tools (e.g., LinkedIn Recruiter).
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage and close candidates.
  • Ability to operate with high autonomy while collaborating cross-functionally.
Desired Experience & Qualifications:
  • Experience recruiting in robotics, autonomy, defense, or other deep-tech environments.
  • Experience in both agency and in-house recruiting.
  • Experience hiring for forward-deployed or field-based roles.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced startup or scaling organization.
  • Strong sourcing skills, including Boolean search and proactive candidate outreach strategies.

  • Parental leave
