Job description

TITLE:                                    Exceptional Children Teacher - General Curriculum
QUALIFICATIONS: N.C. teacher certification, EC General Curriculum License; Previous experience as an EC resource teacher preferred.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • B.A/B.S degree in teaching from an accredited institution or related field teaching
  • North Carolina State certification in teaching in appropriate subject area.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Must have the ability and proven ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.
  • Perform all other related work delegated or required to accomplish the objectives of the total school program.
  • Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology.
  • Meet professional teacher education requirements of school, district and state.
SALARY:                                NC Teacher Salary + 18% supplement

SUPERVISES:                        May coordinate and direct activities of paraprofessional and/or clerical assistants.
REPORTS TO:                       The school principal or his/her designee
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning for students with disabilities following general education curriculum.
  2. Develops schemes of work, lesson plans and assessments that are in accordance with established procedures.
  3. Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment.
  4. Develop data based Individualized Education Plans and other special education required paperwork.   Schedule, lead and/or participate in parent conferences/IEP meetings, etc. as appropriate.
  5. Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction and complete special education documents (IEP's, etc.)
  6. Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and implementing individualized behavior plans.
  7. Maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school.
  8. Provide appropriate feedback on work to parents and students as appropriate.
  9. Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust teaching strategies.
  10. Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development.
  11. Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies and school regulations. Prepare required reports on students and activities.
  12. Participate in department, school, district and parent meetings.
  13. Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and student needs.
  14. Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
  15. Prepare classroom and students for class activities and community based experiences as appropriate.
  16. Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities in special education and general education settings as well as community based settings.
  17. Observe and evaluate student's performance and development.
  18. Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds.
  19. Direct and supervise teacher assistants in supporting and meeting the needs of students with disabilities.
  20. Effectively collaborate and communicate with general educators in co-taught classrooms.
  21. Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information for parents when requested, promptly return phone calls and answer emails.
  22. Participate in appropriate professional activities.
  23. Other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:       Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:           Ten-month year.  Salary in accordance with certification and placement on the adopted schedule.
EVALUATION:                                 Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the Board of Education policy on the evaluation of teachers.
