Job Overview of Certified Teaching Assistant NYS Levels 1 -111
The Teaching Assistant is responsible to carry out program plans to maintain a safe and therapeutic living environment for all children in care at Andrus during the school day. With the direction and support of the school administration, the Teaching Assistant provides close supervision, instruction, counseling, and support to the children in the residence where assigned. Teaching Assistant ensures that the basic needs of children are met, and that the program space is maintained in a safe, orderly and clean condition. The Teaching Assistant is to be assigned by the Assistant Principal/School Business Manager to a classroom in the school. He/she will assist students with transitions, intervene when there are conflicts between students and maintain a presence with the class at all times. They will enter the classrooms when appropriate (to be determined by classroom teacher and school administration) to assist in classroom instruction, discipline and maintain an orderly environment. The teaching assistant will be assigned by the school administration to the appropriate posts according to the needs of the school. The Classroom Teacher will supervise the Teaching Assistant during day-to-day operations.

  • 12 month position 40 hour work week.
  • Hours – 8:00 AM-3:45 PM, Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri. Wednesday: 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM

Essential Duties of Certified Teaching Assistant NYS Levels 1 -111

  1. Understanding and supporting the agency’s mission & treatment philosophy.
    • Treats all children, families and co-workers with respect & courtesy.
    • Demonstrates & models sensitivity to cultural background of children, families and co-workers.
    • Honors Sanctuary Commitments and uses Sanctuary Tools in all day to day activities
  2. Safely manages all aspects of job responsibilities.
    • Knows and complies with agency standards regarding therapeutic crisis intervention and restraint.
    • Provides children with level appropriate supervision at all times.
    • Maintains a safe & hazard–free work area. Effectively monitors facilities & equipment for cleanliness and hazards. Raises concerns when appropriate.
    • Provides instruction to students under the supervision of a certified teacher
  3. Manages program routines effectively.
    • Adheres to school programming plan and routines.
    • Provides guidance and assistance needed to help children maintain their clothing, personal hygiene and personal possessions in a neat, clean, and orderly way.
  4. Manages treatment issues effectively
    • Remains positively engaged with children at all times, throughout the work day.
    • Avoids power struggles with children and provides continuous support and encouragement.
    • Demonstrates understanding of the child’s issues and the role the 1:1 school aide plays in the child’s treatment plan
  5. Works effectively with others on the team.
    • Is flexible and accommodating in unplanned or crisis situations.
    • Seeks and accepts help and direction from full time staff.
    • Actively participates in team discussions and cooperates follow through on plans.
  6. Completes all paperwork requirements clearly, accurately and in a timely fashion.
    • Completes critical incident reports as appropriate
    • Completes facility work requests as necessary
  7. Actively participates in training opportunities and supervisory discussions when scheduled and needed.
  8. Supports overall strategic plan of the organization

Essential Qualifications of Certified Teaching Assistant NYS Levels 1 -111

  1. High School Diploma and at least six college credits
  2. Certified as a Teaching Assistant Levels I-III by New York State upon hire.
  3. Minimum of one year’s experience working with emotionally challenged children
  4. In the lieu of experience must have a one year of college
  5. Good Oral and Written Communication Skills
  6. If a driver, Must be licensed and operates vehicles safely and adheres to all rules of the road.
  7. Ability to access and utilize ADP app on smartphone or other device for access to agency programs

Physical/Travel Requirements of Certified Teaching Assistant NYS Levels 1 -111

Candidates who are successfully hired, must participate in our Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training which concludes with a written and verbal test, and you will be evaluated on conducting a proper physical restraint.

Must possess ability to sit, stand, walk, run, climb stairs, kneel, and lift weights of up to 30lbs

Have the physical capacity to restrain or assist in the restraint of a child

Must be able to hear and see well enough to provide appropriate supervision of children

Must have reliable transportation. Travel required: 10%
