What are Tachi?

Tachi refers to a type of traditional Japanese sword that was used by samurai before the development of the katana. Characterized by its curved, slender blade and longer length, the tachi was typically worn suspended edge-down from the belt, which distinguished it from the katana that is worn edge-up. Tachi swords were popular from the late Heian period through the early Muromachi period and were often ornately decorated to signify the status of the wearer. Today, tachi are valuable artifacts and are studied for their historical and artistic significance.
