What are System Administrators?

System Administrators, often called sysadmins, are IT professionals responsible for installing, configuring, maintaining, and supporting computer systems and servers within an organization. They ensure that networks and systems run efficiently and securely, manage user accounts, oversee backups, and troubleshoot hardware and software issues. System Administrators play a key role in maintaining system uptime, implementing security protocols, and updating systems to prevent vulnerabilities. Their work is critical for the smooth and secure operation of a company's IT infrastructure.

What is the difference between System Administrator vs Network Administrator?

AspectSystem AdministratorNetwork Administrator
CertificationsCompTIA Server+, Microsoft Certified: Windows Server FundamentalsCompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA
Work EnvironmentManage servers, operating systems, and internal IT infrastructureFocus on network hardware, configurations, and connectivity
ResponsibilitiesMaintain servers, troubleshoot OS issues, manage backupsConfigure routers/switches, monitor network performance, ensure security

While both roles support IT infrastructure, System Administrators primarily manage servers and operating systems, whereas Network Administrators focus on network hardware and connectivity. They often collaborate but have distinct technical focuses within an organization.

What are some common challenges System Administrators face when managing a large IT infrastructure, and how can these be addressed?

System Administrators often encounter challenges such as ensuring system security, managing software updates across numerous devices, and troubleshooting network issues in large-scale environments. Keeping up with rapidly evolving technology and balancing routine maintenance with unexpected incidents can be demanding. Effective solutions include automating repetitive tasks, implementing robust monitoring tools, and regularly communicating with other IT team members to proactively address potential problems. Continuous learning and staying current with best practices in cybersecurity and system management are also essential for long-term success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a System Administrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a System Administrator, you need a solid understanding of computer networks, operating systems (Windows, Linux), and troubleshooting, often backed by a degree in IT or related certifications like CompTIA Network+ or Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate. Familiarity with tools such as Active Directory, virtualization platforms, backup solutions, and monitoring systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you manage incidents and work with diverse teams. These abilities ensure reliable system performance, minimize downtime, and support seamless business operations.

What Does a System Administrator Do?

The job of a System Administrator is to assume a range of IT responsibilities and technical services for your company’s internet and intranet presence. This will include such duties as installing anti-virus and malware protection software, undertaking regular systems maintenance, and troubleshooting problems. Additional duties can include serving as a digital technology information resource for employees and consulting with company leaders on the possible adoption of new technologies. Aside from this, you might be asked to evaluate and boost network system performance, make needed upgrades and repairs, and add approved users to the network and train them in proper usage.

About the role

We are looking for a technically solid and automation-minded System Administrator to join our internal IT team at Nakisa's Montréal headquarters.

Reporting to the IT Manager, this is a hands-on role at the core of our day-to-day IT operations - keeping systems running, supporting employees across a global organization, and continuously finding smarter ways to do things. You will work across Windows and Linux environments, Microsoft 365, virtualization, and networking, while actively contributing to our automation and AI-driven IT initiatives.

This is an ideal role for someone early in their IT career who wants real ownership, broad technical exposure, and the opportunity to grow in an environment that takes technology seriously. You won't be managing a helpdesk queue in isolation - you'll be working alongside experienced IT leadership, contributing to meaningful infrastructure projects, and building the skills that set you up for a long-term career in systems administration, cloud, or security.

What you'll be doing

  • Provide Tier 2 support for infrastructure, systems, applications, and end-user issues, with priority on automation and self-service to reduce ticket volume, escalating when required.
  • Support core IT operations, including employee onboarding/offboarding, access provisioning, and system configuration.
  • Administer and maintain Windows and Linux server environments supporting internal services and applications such as file servers, development and QA systems/servers.
  • Manage Microsoft 365 services, including Entra ID, Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, and identity/access management with emphasis on automated access governance.
  • Administer Active Directory services, including domains, users, group policies (GPOs), and related services (DNS, DHCP, CA and etc.).
  • Monitor system performance, availability, and security, and assist in resolving issues proactively.
  • Support and troubleshoot network infrastructure, including switches, firewalls, VLANs, VPNs, and internal connectivity.
  • Deploy and maintain virtual machines using VMware vSphere/vCenter or Microsoft Hyper-V.
  • Develop and maintain basic automation scripts (PowerShell, Bash, Python) to improve operational efficiency, manual IT operations and enable self-service.
  • Contribute to system integrations and automation initiatives across internal and external platforms.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation for systems, processes, and changes, including AI agent and automation playbooks.
  • Collaborate with engineering and internal teams on infrastructure and operational initiatives.
  • Identify repetitive IT tasks and convert them into automated workflows or AI agents.

What you bring

  • Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 1–2 years of experience in system administration or a similar IT infrastructure role.
  • Solid understanding of server administration, troubleshooting, and monitoring.
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, firewalls).
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft 365, including Entra ID and core collaboration services.
  • Experience supporting Linux and Windows environments.
  • Familiarity with scripting or automation using PowerShell, Bash, Python, or similar.
  • Understanding of backup and disaster recovery concepts.
  • Basic knowledge of cybersecurity principles, including patching, endpoint security, and access control.
  • Exposure to security tools such as firewalls, EDR, or SIEM is an asset, not a requirement.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work under guidance.
  • Experience with customer support and service management platforms (e.g., Atlassian Jira, including workflows, permissions, and integrations).
  • Awareness of compliance and security frameworks (e.g., ISO 27001, SOC 2).
  • Hands-on experience or strong interest in AI-assisted IT operations (Copilot, automation platforms, workflow automation, AI agents).
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Strong documentation habits and attention to detail.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
  • Fluency in English is required to perform essential IT functions, including supporting global systems and interacting with international vendors.

*The technology infrastructure supports operations and teams distributed internationally.

Nice-to-have

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure (basic administration, IAM, or resource management).
  • Experience with customer relationship management (CRM) platforms (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics 365).
  • Microsoft certifications such as M365 Administrator, Azure Fundamentals or similar certification
  • Network certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or CompTIA Network+
  • Experience with Microsoft Copilot or similar AI productivity tools

What's in It for You

  • Join a growing global SaaS company and be part of a lean, high-impact IT team where your work is visible and your contributions matter from day one.
  • Work directly alongside experienced IT leadership - you'll be mentored, challenged, and given real ownership rather than being handed a ticket queue.
  • Get hands-on exposure to a broad and modern tech stack: Microsoft 365, hybrid cloud, VMware, networking, cybersecurity, and AI-driven automation.
  • Be part of Nakisa's AI and automation transformation from the ground up - this is a company that is investing in the future of IT, not just maintaining the status quo.
  • Clear growth path toward senior system administration, cloud specialization, or IT security as you develop your skills.
  • Support for professional development, including certifications and ongoing learning.
