What is a surplus funds recovery specialist?

Surplus funds recovery specialists are professionals who help individuals or businesses claim excess funds that remain after a foreclosure sale, tax sale, or other legal proceedings. When a property is sold for more than the amount owed, the surplus funds are held by the court or government until claimed by the rightful owner. These specialists navigate the legal processes, gather documentation, and file claims on behalf of their clients to recover these funds. They typically work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if the recovery is successful.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a surplus funds recovery specialist?

To thrive as a Surplus Funds Recovery Specialist, you need a solid understanding of real estate, foreclosure processes, and legal documentation, often supported by relevant coursework or experience in finance or real estate. Familiarity with public records systems, document management tools, and customer relationship management (CRM) software is typically required. Strong investigative skills, persistence, and excellent verbal and written communication help specialists build trust with clients and navigate complex cases. These abilities are essential for efficiently locating and recovering funds while ensuring clients' interests are protected and legal standards are met.

What are the common challenges faced in a surplus funds recovery role, and how can they be managed effectively?

Professionals in Surplus Funds Recovery often face challenges such as tracking down eligible claimants, navigating complex legal documentation, and ensuring timely compliance with state regulations. Building strong communication skills and attention to detail are essential, as you may need to explain processes clearly to claimants and gather precise documentation. Collaborating closely with legal teams, government agencies, and sometimes title companies helps manage these challenges and ensures successful recoveries. Staying organized and up-to-date with changing laws can further reduce obstacles and enhance efficiency in this role.

Job description

Our client is a specialized financial services firm focused on helping individuals and families recover surplus funds that may be owed to them following foreclosure sales and other property-related proceedings. The organization works directly with potential beneficiaries and property owners to identify individuals who may be entitled to recover funds, guide them through the recovery process, and help ensure that the necessary documentation and requirements are completed properly. Because these cases can involve complex family dynamics, heirs, executors, and multiple decision-makers, the company takes a highly personal, hands-on approach to client service. The team is committed to building trust, maintaining consistent communication, and staying persistent throughout the process to help clients successfully move their cases forward.

We are seeking a motivated, personable, and results-driven Client Acquisition Specialist to join our growing team. This is a highly interactive, relationship-driven sales and client acquisition position for someone who is comfortable picking up the phone, meeting people face-to-face, and relentlessly following up until a client makes a decision. You will be responsible for connecting with prospective clients, explaining the company's surplus funds recovery services, identifying the appropriate decision-maker, securing signed agreements and required documentation, and working with internal teams to help move each case toward completion. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator and listener who can quickly establish trust, navigate sensitive family situations, and creatively find ways to reach the right person. This is an in-office position based in the Hudson Valley, New York, with weekly travel throughout the tri-state area required for client meetings and visits.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct 100+ outbound calls per day to prospective clients and individuals who may qualify for the company's services.
  • Proactively engage prospective clients through multiple communication channels, including:
    • Phone calls
    • Text messaging
    • Email
    • Social media
    • Referrals
    • In-person outreach and client visits
  • Develop and execute persistent follow-up strategies across multiple channels to maximize contact and conversion rates.
  • Continue pursuing opportunities through multiple attempts and communication methods, demonstrating the persistence necessary to move prospects from initial contact through signed engagement.
  • Meet with prospective and active clients in person to explain the company's services, answer questions, build confidence, obtain signatures, and collect required documentation.
  • Clearly explain the client acquisition and recovery process in a straightforward, professional, and easy-to-understand manner.
  • Build genuine relationships with prospective clients by listening carefully, understanding their individual circumstances, and providing clear guidance throughout the enrollment process.
  • Identify the true decision-maker and key stakeholders involved in each case, which may include the property owner, an heir, executor, spouse, family member, or other individual with influence over the decision.
  • Understand and navigate family dynamics when multiple individuals may be involved in determining whether to move forward.
  • Develop relationships with relevant family members and stakeholders when necessary to ensure the appropriate decision-makers are engaged.
  • Overcome objections and address concerns professionally while maintaining a high level of trust and credibility.
  • Find creative and resourceful solutions when prospects are difficult to reach, hesitant to move forward, or require additional information before making a decision.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and detailed records of all prospect and client interactions in the company's CRM and Trello systems.
  • Keep track of multiple active opportunities simultaneously, ensuring that no prospective client or follow-up opportunity falls through the cracks.
  • Coordinate closely with internal team members to communicate client updates, provide necessary documentation, and maximize the number of successfully signed clients.
  • Maintain consistent follow-up with prospects and clients throughout the process to ensure cases continue moving forward.
  • Travel locally throughout the tri-state area on a weekly basis to meet with clients and prospective clients in person.
  • Consistently meet or exceed activity, client acquisition, and performance goals.
What Makes Someone Successful in This Role

The ideal candidate will be someone who genuinely enjoys working with people and is energized by the challenge of turning a cold prospect into a trusted client relationship. Success in this position requires a combination of sales ability, emotional intelligence, persistence, organization, and resourcefulness.

Successful candidates will demonstrate:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly and confidently with a wide range of individuals.
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills and the ability to quickly establish credibility and trust.
  • Strong listening skills and the ability to understand what a client is actually concerned about before presenting a solution.
  • The ability to identify the real decision-maker and understand who needs to be involved before a case can move forward.
  • Comfort navigating situations where heirs, executors, spouses, children, siblings, or other family members may influence the decision-making process.
  • A persistent, determined mindset and the willingness to continue following up after multiple unanswered calls or messages.
  • A resourceful and creative approach to client acquisition, with the ability to find alternative ways to reach prospects and overcome obstacles.
  • A solutions-oriented mentality: when one approach does not work, you find another rather than getting stuck.
  • The ability to manage a high volume of leads and opportunities without losing attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain accurate records across CRM and project management systems.
  • A high level of personal accountability and ownership over results.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, performance-driven environment where activity and results are closely connected.
  • The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a broader team.
Qualifications
  • Previous experience in sales, client acquisition, business development, real estate, financial services, or another customer-facing role.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with prospects and clients and build relationships quickly.
  • Experience with outbound calling, lead follow-up, prospecting, or direct client acquisition strongly preferred.
  • Comfortable making 100+ outbound calls per day and maintaining a high level of activity.
  • Strong follow-up skills with the discipline to consistently pursue opportunities across multiple communication channels.
  • Experience using a CRM, lead management platform, or sales tracking system preferred.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage numerous active opportunities at once.
  • Comfortable meeting with clients in person and representing the organization professionally.
  • Willingness and ability to travel locally on a weekly basis for client meetings throughout the tri-state area.
  • Must be comfortable working in-office in the Hudson Valley, New York.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for local client travel preferred/required.
  • A self-motivated, competitive, and entrepreneurial mindset with a strong desire to earn based on performance.
Compensation & Earning Potential
  • Base Salary: $50,000-$60,000 per year
  • On-Target Earnings (OTE): Approximately $100,000-$120,000 annually
  • Competitive base salary combined with performance-based commission
  • Significant earning potential for high-performing Client Acquisition Specialists who consistently generate and convert new clients
  • Compensation structure designed to reward strong activity, persistence, client acquisition, and overall performance
  • Opportunity to substantially increase total earnings through commission and continued success in the role
