Job description

Gana-A'Yoo Services Corporation, GSC, is renowned for excellence in delivery, performance and customer satisfaction with a focus on Food Service, Janitorial Services and Administrative Services. GSC supports the National Science Foundation managed United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) and we are currently seeking a Janitorial Steward at McMurdo Station.

As a Janitorial Steward you are responsible for providing service and performing duties that support efforts to maintain sanitation standards in public use areas. Also responsible for the cleaning and restocking supplies in all common areas, dormitories, work centers and recreational facilities under the responsibility of the lodging staff.

POSITION: Steward, Janitorial

SEASON: Austral Summer (Summer 2026-2027)

LOCATION: McMurdo Station, Antarctica

SECTOR/DEPT: Gana-A'Yoo Services Corporation (GSC) Antarctica

SALARY: $750-788 per week

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Displays a commitment to providing exceptional service, as outlined by the Janitorial Steward Coordinator and Lead Janitors
  • Performs daily tasking in an efficient and thorough manner, as instructed by the Lead Janitor.
  • Responsible for maintaining clean and organized work areas.
  • Responsible for cleaning bathrooms and other common areas in dormitories, work centers, and recreation facilities.
  • Cleans and disinfects surfaces contaminated by bodily fluids in accordance with proper blood borne pathogen procedures
  • Restocks cleaning supplies and maintains organization of janitorial storage closets.
  • Responsible for the transportation and processing of linens from incoming and outgoing passengers.
  • Responsible for cleaning and preparing personnel dormitories as needed.
  • May also be tasked to assist in special projects, including furniture moving, carpet extraction, waxing and buffing floors, and seasonal building opening/closing.
  • Responsible for reporting any maintenance issues to the, Janitorial Steward Coordinator and/or Lead Janitors/, and in a timely manner.
  • Able to complete assignments in a timely, organized manner, following through with tasking from beginning to end.
  • Agrees with and adheres to the Standard Operating Procedures and tasking responsibilities in janitorial duties.
  • Responsible for cleaning and preparing personnel dormitories as needed.
  • Responsible for reporting any maintenance issues to the Janitorial Steward Coordinator and Lead Janitors in a timely manner.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to the safety regulation maximum in a safe manner and perform functions requiring repetitive motion, standing for up to 9 hours daily, and working on hands and knees.
  • Able to work in a team unit composed of diverse personalities.
  • Displays self-motivation in physically challenging and atypical work environment.
  • Able to maintain flexibility and positive attitude in a dynamic, fast-paced work setting.
  • Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether metrics are directly or indirectly, affected by this position's work activities.
  • Complies with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.
  • Works to achieve ASC goals and contractual commitments.
  • Janitorial Stewards may be required to work on a night shift. Dayshift work hours are variable and subject to change with very little notice.
  • Participates in MCI trainings and drill as determined by supervisor.
  • Agrees with and adheres to the Standard Operating Procedures and tasking responsibilities janitorial duties.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
  • Able to complete assignments in a timely, organized manner, following through with tasking from beginning to end.
  • Attends all scheduled employee meetings and brings suggestions for improvement to the attention of the Janitorial Steward Coordinator, Lead Janitors.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by manager-on-duty.

EDUCATION:

  • High school education or GED.

CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current ServSafe Food Handler certificate must be obtained prior to deployment to Antarctica.
  • Valid driver's license
  • Valid U.S. Passport

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of one year experience in a custodial related or manual labor industry required.
  • Previous experience with Stations Services in Antarctica may be accepted in lieu of minimum experience.

OTHER:

  • US citizenship or permanent residency required
  • A prerequisite of employment for this position is to successfully gain a favorable Tier 1 - Elevated Background Investigation (EBI) result prior to deployment. Candidates hired for this position will be required to complete; online forms, written forms, fingerprint cards and provide additional details and information as requested by NSF Personnel Security.
