Subtitling Project information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Subtitling Project role, and why are they important?

To excel in a Subtitling Project role, you need strong language proficiency, attention to detail, and a background in translation or linguistics, often supported by relevant coursework or experience. Familiarity with subtitling software like Aegisub, Subtitle Edit, or professional tools such as EZTitles, along with knowledge of captioning standards, is typically required. Excellent time management, communication, and adaptability are important soft skills for handling tight deadlines and collaborating with clients or teams. These abilities ensure subtitles are accurate, culturally appropriate, and delivered efficiently, which is critical for audience comprehension and project success.

What is the difference between Subtitling Project vs Captioning Project?

AspectSubtitling ProjectCaptioning Project
CredentialsLanguage proficiency, translation skillsSame as subtitling, plus hearing impairment knowledge
Work EnvironmentFilm, TV, online videosLive broadcasts, TV, online streaming
Industry UsageMedia localization, entertainmentAccessibility services, broadcasting

Both subtitling and captioning projects involve text conversion of audio content, but subtitling focuses on translating dialogue for viewers in different languages, while captioning emphasizes accessibility for the hearing impaired, often including descriptions of sounds. They share similar skills and tools but serve different primary audiences and purposes.

What are some typical challenges faced when managing a subtitling project, and how can they be addressed?

A common challenge in subtitling projects is ensuring high-quality, accurate translations while meeting tight deadlines. Project managers often coordinate with translators, editors, and quality assurance teams across different time zones, which can complicate scheduling and communication. Effective use of subtitling software and clear workflow guidelines help maintain consistency and efficiency. Open communication and regular progress check-ins with the team are key to addressing issues quickly and delivering projects on time.

What is a subtitling project?

A subtitling project involves creating, translating, and synchronizing text captions that appear on screen to represent spoken dialogue or other audio elements in a video. This process includes transcribing the original audio, timing subtitles to match the speech, and ensuring translation accuracy if the subtitles are in another language. Subtitling projects are commonly used in films, TV shows, online videos, and educational content to make them accessible to a wider audience, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing or speakers of different languages.

Job description

The Language Producer, English (LPEN), Global Localization is responsible for ensuring that localization of Amazon MGM Studios Local Originals (LO) content into English maintains the overall creative vision and quality of the original version when dubbed and subtitled, while navigating the complexities of this more nascent industry segment, such as talent pools and audience receptivity.
Key job responsibilities
As a strategic leader, the LPEN researches market trends/developments to support expansion and maturation of the Premium English Dubbing Program. Working with the Culver City team, they drive iterative workflow and process improvements to raise the creative bar and support scalable solutions for all in-territory content. The LPEN will be comfortable discussing English dubbing and subtitling both high level and granularly; maintaining metrics for talent/vendors and providing escalations for internal/external resources

As primary contact for internal LO creative talent/stakeholders, the LPEN will provide localization updates related to their titles.
The LPEN monitors the performance of Creative Supervisors, responsible for creative quality and title-by-title localization of Amazon MGM Studios content. Additionally, the LPEN builds and maintains relationships with dubbing studios & their associated creative teams, to understand potential and available opportunities for programmatic improvements supporting talent development and cultivation.

Working independently, the LPEN connects English language localization, the creative community, and Amazon MGM Studios' operational direction.
