Job description

Substitute Teacher
JOB GOAL:   Provides continuity of instruction for students in the absence of the classroom teacher so that student academic progress is not interrupted. 
REPORTS TO:  Principal
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:





  1. Associates degree or minimum of 60 credit hours.
  2. Official college transcripts sent via eScript or mailed directly to Human Resources from the College/University attended.
  3. Must complete a state-approved teacher preparation program leading to certification, or completion of a substitute teacher training program in a U.S. public school district. You can receive a Substitute Training Diploma online through STEDI.org (with a score of 85% or higher) or through a Substitute Teacher Training Program that must be approved by RCPS.   4. Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills.
  5. Ability to relate well to students, parents, and co-workers.
  6. Physical demands position requires significant standing and some sitting, kneeling and walking.  Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling will not normally exceed thirty (30) pounds, and will normally be in the area of ten (10) pounds.  Must be able to move about the classroom and monitor student behavior.

JOB DUTIES:
 

  1. Arrives at work early enough each day to read the lesson plans and to be fully prepared for each class and/or other duties before students arrive.
  2. Arrives at work dressed neatly and professionally.
  3. Follows the guidelines and instructions provided in the substitute training program. 
  4. Interacts in a professional and cooperative manner with students, parents, and faculty, exhibiting good behavioral judgment in all encounters throughout the school day.
  5. Treats students with dignity and respect and maintains student confidentiality .
  6. Conducts assigned classes at the times scheduled.      
  7. Effectively manages the behavior of learners to ensure the environment is conducive to learning.
  8. Ensures that students do not leave the classroom unless absolutely necessary.
  9. Enforces regulations concerning student conduct and discipline.    
  10. Seeks information and assistance from other teachers and/or administrators.
  11. Models correct use of oral and written language.
  12. Follows teacher lesson plans.  Does not change or omit any part of the lesson plans.
  13. Takes precautions to protect records, classroom equipment, materials and facilities.
  14. Provides the regular classroom teacher with notes regarding how the classes went and any unusual problems.  
  15. Is flexible and prepared for changes to the original assignment, depending on the needs of the school.
  16. Demonstrates an attitude and demeanor that contribute to an atmosphere of harmony and goodwill in the work place.
  17. Meets the performance and behavioral expectations of the principal.
  18. Complies with all requirements for mandatory reporting of child abuse, illegal harassment, or criminal activity for which the substitute teacher becomes aware.
  19. Perform other duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:   Per Diem works on an as-needed basis only.  There is no expectation of continuous employment for substitute teachers.
