The Study Abroad Advisor is responsible for recruiting and advising study abroad students from assigned colleges for semester and summer Study Abroad programs, including but not limited to exchanges, direct enroll, and affiliate partners. This position supports the students throughout the Study Abroad process from initial inquiry to returnee stage. The position works with students to collect and organize LSU Study Abroad required documentation, manage tracking mechanisms, maintain required documents, forms, and processes, etc.

Salary Range: $42,960-$51,553

Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications within the posted range.

Job Responsibilities

Advising Duties & Responsibilities (60%):

  • Advises students from assigned college(s) throughout the process on study abroad program opportunities and requirements, administers acceptance decisions, and promotes the program through outreach to the university community. Advising may include information about major/minor/elective requirements, financial aid, scholarships, credit transfer, and other topics.

  • Maintains expert understanding of University policies pertaining to academic programs abroad. Responds to inquiries from students, parents, faculty, and others regarding program policies, procedures, and requirements,making referrals as appropriate.

  • Advises on the Benjamin A Gilman, Boren, Critical Language Scholarship, Study Abroad scholarships, and other scholarship opportunities.

  • Maintains accurate applicant data, runs reports, and manages website information through the Terra Dotta application site.

  • Maintains effective relationships with academic and administrative departments, as well as overseas partners and program providers. Acts as liaison between the overseas partner/program provider and students for education abroad and exchange purposes.

Programming Operations (30%)

  • Develops and executes a marketing and recruitment plan, but not limited to, bi-annual Education Abroad fairs, information sessions, pre-departure orientation, and re-entry sessions.

  • Facilitates student pre-departure orientation for faculty-led and semester-long students in collaboration with team members

  • Identifies special projects and partners with the Director of Study Abroad to further the goals of the Study Abroad Office.

Professional Development (10%)

  • Ensures program quality and continual self-development through self-directed learning, professional development, and appropriate site visits.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements

  • FERPA - As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health-related matter, they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students, or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
